Installing W2K3 SP2 on application servers such as SQL and MOSS

Should we stop those application services first, and then install SP2? Sorry

if seems dumb Q but I have not come across any material that does say to stop

such services, and I would think you *would* want to stop such services.

Also, SP2 Readme says use MS Update to install SP2 if you have installed

services such as .Net 2.0 in order to assure these services work properly.

That does not make sense -- what about the full download posted on TechNet,

for example, why would that not work just as well.

Thanks,

Hello,

Regarding the first question:

=======================

Well, there is no need to stop these services. However, you should make

sure that there is no application or program interacting with these

services during the installation. If you have any applications or grogram

interacting with these services, you should close them. Besides, there are

some other things you should do before you install SP2, see the following

articles for more detailed information:

Readme for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/6d70c1d0-9112-43d4-b4

Release Notes for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/ed5382af-e819-4d33-ac

e0-225d31b7ab751033.mspx?mfr=true

General information are listed here:

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 Technical Library:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/c7710b24-4c7f-42ce-b5

ba-12ed5284f9271033.mspx?mfr=true

Regarding the second question:

==========================

Well, SP2 only includes fixes for .NET Framework 1.1, rather than .NET

Framework 2.0. So, if you have installed .NET Framework 2.0, you may need

to apply some latest hotfix for .NET Framework 2.0 to ensure it can work

well after the updating. That's why you need to use Microsoft Update

For the list of updates in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, please see:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/914962

Good luck.

George Yin

George,

Thanks.

Re: Q2: Since I only install an SP by itself with no other updates at same

time, and since SP requires reboot, it is apparent to me then to run SP from

redistributable download then run MS Updates after.
