XP Home

Have an Outlook account which is authenticated and secure with POP3 going via port 995 and SMTP going via port 10 to the same server, mail.domain.net.

Outlook receives emails but no longer sends them. It tries to but they just stay in the outbox.

Have set up account in Outlook Express - same result

Have set up totally new user in XP - same result.

Have tried Safe Mode with Networking - same result.

Also Windows Firewall turned off.

BUT the settings all work from a Blackberry & other users on the domain confirm settings are correct and have no problems.

Finally have also run CCleaner & Malwarebytes.

So - any thoughts appreciated

Who is the ISP for your email? That is, who do you pay for internet access?

What version of Outlook are you using?

You show you are running Windows 7. Windows 7 cannot run Outlook Express. So I'm confused as to how you managed to set up your account on Outlook Express running Windows 7.

Internet access is Orange. The mail provider is Alburia. As I said others have the same Outlook configuration with no problem, unless Orange have an SMTP problem, but Gmail works fine.

Office Professional = Outlook 2003

At the top of my post I said XP Home, my profile says Win 7 but I have other PC's and friends.

I can't seem to find anything on Alburia. Can you provide a link to that service please.

For now I'm guessing this is a case of not having a paid subscription. Most email providers will not let you send mail through a client unless you are paying them. Yahoo mail in the USA is like that but you can use all the web based mail features. Setting up an Orange email account with Orange would work because you pay for it. However you still have to do it from a computer that is connected to the Orange ISP.

If you have a paid account with Alburia you might need to do it from a computer or device that has the paid subscription.

For instance I can receive mail through Outlook from my ISP even if I do it from a different computer that does not have internet access from my ISP. But I cannot send. For that I have to be connected to the internet through my ISP for my ISP provided mail to send.

No can do it's a private email system, part of the organisation for which I work. Hence its free. The system administrator confirms there is nothing wrong at his end and the settings are correct and has no solution. Please note I'm based at home so he is many miles away

What you say is partly true but, for example, gmail and hotmail, both free, can both receive and send through Outlook (pop3/smtp) irrespective of the ISP like my private network.

So any ideas on what could block port 10?

Posted

OK.

You've tried these settings on different computers with Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

I think that rules out a firewall or security blocking the port. This can only mean one of your settings is incorrect or it's being blocked from sending from their end.

Unfortunately I can't personally verify that they have given you the correct settings as this is a private network as you noted. There are a couple things you can check though.

Make sure port 10 is correct for SMTP and not something else like port 25.

On the server tab under Outgoing Mail Server there is My Server Requires Authentication. Tic or untic per required settings. Click the Settings button there and make sure you are "Using the same settings as my incoming mail server".

In Advanced under Server Port Settings-Outgoing Mail (SMTP) tic or untic as required "This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

Notice there are two seperate settings areas for SMPT. Authentication and secure connection. They both have to be set according to your mail network.

Like I said it's either their end or your settings are wrong. I can't check their network for the settings though.

Be assured all the settings are correct. They work on another PC which can send. Also have now run scanpst with no effect.

Is the "other PC" connected to "your" Orange account? I'm having trouble following the details here.

It is possible that Orange blocks port 10. Some ISP's block port 25 for instance.

With no firewall turned on nothing else can block a port. I have heard of malicious software opening a port but never closing one. So that leaves the basics.

1. Settings are incorrect. Carefully go over ALL of them again noting the ones I listed.

2. Their network has a problem. Only they can help you with that.

3. Orange blocks port 10. Check with Orange or see if your email network has an alternate port that will work.

Short of those 3 things I can think of absolutely nothing else that would cause this.

Thank you Synapse. You said it better than I did. Nice link too.

As he said those are the standard ports so you might want to try those if your email network will support it.

Thanks Synapse I appreciate the help as always my friend.

Thanks Synapse - however port 10 did work and now it doesn't. All others in the organisation use the same settings.

I've assumed the problem has to be on the PC. I can't see Orange suddenly changing their protocols.

I've confused myself.

Cannot be Orange as the settings work on another of my computers.

So it has to be something on the original computer.
