Because my unit startup in Windows XP is frustratingly slow I have been

trying to cleanup the few things I know that effect the startup. In the

process there is a Quicktime icon in the area of the toolbar next to the

clock, I think it is called the system tray. I can right click on the icon

and select exit and the icon disappears but at the next startup it's there

again. Long ago I have been through the procedure to remove programs from

that area of the toolbar but that process escapes me now and so far I have

not found any instructions anywhere that address that procedure. I was unable

to find anything labeled Quicktime in either Add or Remove Programs or in

Start - All Programs. When I did a Search for Quicktime, the result said it

was in C:Programs. When I went to C:Programs I found a Quicktime folder but

in it was only one entry and it was neither .exe or uninstall. Would anyone

have any idea what may be going on? Also any suggestions about where to find

instructions for finding what all starts at Startup and how to adjust what

all starts at Startup will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.

No, you need to open QuickTime and change the preferences so it won't

load. On the other hand I've found that uninstalling it is the best

method of preventing it from interfering with the users files.

As has already been pointed out, the best way to prevent an application from

launching at startup is through the program's options or preferences. An

alternative approach is to use this program from Microsoft.

AutoRuns for Windows v9.21

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Once you've unzipped the files, launch autoruns.exe. When the Open File -

Security Warning pops up, remove the check mark from the box next to "Always ask

before opening this file". In Autoruns, click on the Logon tab. Right click the

items you're interested in removing and select "Search online" from the menu.

Hopefully, you'll find useful information that will help you decide if the item

is worth keeping or should be disabled. You can uncheck an item to prevent it

from running at startup.

FWIW, when the QuickTime icon shows up in the Notification area it is usually

because qttask.exe is configured to run at startup. Since you say that QuickTime

is no longer installed on your computer, I have no idea why you're seeing the

QuickTime icon.

Good luck
