Missknowall Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Hiya, I have posted recently, and thought this problom was connected to the firefox/hotmail issues, however, I dont think it is. Anyway, my work software, used on laptop wihich is Wiindows 7 keeps showing the - non responding term when i try to input anything. I use it in Internet Explorer. I am unable to work and dont know whether the software might work in Chrome or in Firefox. I know there is no problem with software as last Summer I used it successfully on the same laptop in IE. My colleagues successfully use it on Winodows 7 and in IE. The company always say to use it only in IE. Please help. My laptop is still under warranty but could take two weeks for repair( if needed as retailer would need to send of to Hewlett Packard). I cant be two weeks without it as use it with another company too- their software works fine. I cant afford another pc- thus would be so grateful for your help. Quote
PseFrank Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Programs not responding could mean that you have a virus and or malware on your laptop. If that is the case, then one of our resident malware experts will probably be able to help you out. It should be noted that just because there was no problem with your software last summer, doesn't mean that there is not a problem now. So you could try uninstalling and then reinstalling the program in question. In the meantime there is a couple of other things that you can do for yourself. 1) Make sure that windows is fully updated. To do this click Start (The flag icon) and go to all programs and select Windows Update. You may see a number of updates are available...if this is the case then click Install updates. Also check to see if any optional updates are available. 2) Run a full scan using your resident Anti Virus program. 3) Delete the temp files...Press the win logo key + R and type %temp% ....Hit CTRL + A to select everything. Now click Organize > Delete. If some files cannot be deleted because they are in use, just click Skip. 4) Open Internet Explorer and go...Tools > Internet Options and under the General tab/Browsing history hit Delete. 5) Run the Disk Defragmenter...Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Click.... Defragment Disk. This can take some time, so please be patient. Let us know how you get on.. Missknowall Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 Oh thank you so much for ths reply. I delete temp' files and defragment on a weekly basis. I am going to run a full antivirus scan. I am next due to use the problematic software on Friday. Due to the company not having any technical help, they have advised me to either sort it out, or that my contract wil be terminated. Thus, for Friday, I am borrowing a newish windows 7 laptop and installing the software and phone. I'm going to try that on Friday, and in the near future try to find out why this laptop is giving me problems. Thus, I would really appreciate your patience with this and will keep you informed with my progress. The problem is that you don't get the chance to try out the software untill working on the live system taking calls via voip. Quote
Missknowall Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 Just completed a full computer scan- no threats or viruses found. This was using free AVG. Quote
PseFrank Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 One thing I should have asked you before is...Is it only your voip software/program that you have problems with, or are other programs effected as well? Are you using free voip software or a paid for program? And also...are you using an ATA converter or an IP phone? My personal knowledge regarding Voip is very limited, but your answers may be of help to someone else here on the site. Missknowall Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 The voip phone is working fine- audio is very good. The software is seperate to the voip soft phone which you download onto Pc. The software wasn't downloaded - it was via a website link but it is probably a paid for program by the company. I don't use any ATA converter. I don't want to name the software of softphone in order to preserve the confidentiality. No other programs are affected. i did install all windows updates too. Hope this helps. I hope any of my posts and answers do help others as I am not tech' enough to provide help to others and am too poor to make a donation. Thus thank you so much Quote
PseFrank Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Ok...it may well be that you have malware on your machine. But before handing you over to our resident malware experts we'll try running Chkdsk. Chkdsk will attempt to fix any errors on your disk. Do this: Click Start Click All Programs Click Accessories Click Command Prompt A black window will open with a flashing cursor. Type the following...... chkdsk c: /f Note: Be aware of the space before and after c: Now press the Enter Key. The © denotes your main drive. If your operating system is on another drive then use that letter. After hitting Enter you will see the following message... Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) When you see the above message type.... Y and hit the Enter key. Now restart your computer. Be patient, the process can take a while. Quote I thought I knew today...I'll try again tomorrow. :) Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Missknowall Posted February 11, 2011 Author Posted February 11, 2011 Ok- after entering chkdsk c: /f I get the following message: Access denied as you do not have sufficient priviileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode. Thus could not proceed. Quote
RandyL Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Try right clicking command prompt and choose Run as administrator. Quote We are all members helping other members. Thanks Quote
Missknowall Posted February 12, 2011 Author Posted February 12, 2011 Ok, now get the following message when do it in the administrator command prompt chkdsk c: /f: C:\Windows\system32>chdsk c: /f The type of file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive. Chckdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Quote
RandyL Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Yes that is the way it is supposed to be. What you do is select yes,Y, then restart your computer. At bootup it will start the check. Once started don't interrupt it. Let it run until it is done. See post 7 in this thread. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Missknowall Posted February 12, 2011 Author Posted February 12, 2011 Of course- you did mention that it asks that. I didn't check. I will try again this evening or tomorrow morning. Thanks Quote
Missknowall Posted February 12, 2011 Author Posted February 12, 2011 Hmm- software works perfectly welll with the new laptop. Quote
Goku Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Hello Missknowall. :) Looking at your posts, I have a hunch that the problem might be with IE itself rather than the software. If so, please try resetting the settings and see if it helps or not. If that doesn't work, please try running Internet Explorer as Administrator and then run the software. Also, if possible, try reinstalling the software because it might be as simple as a problem of file corruption. In any case, let us know how it goes. Good luck. :) -- Goku Quote
Missknowall Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Hi, I still haven't done what was advised in post 7. I did work successfully yesterday with new laptop and am again doing today. I am going to try all what is suggested on the faulty laptop , but have to be careful when I decide to try it - if you get what I mean, because shouldIi get the same problem and have to log it with the company- no doubt, I wil be trying their patience. Along with this problem, I am having to deal with an emergency with my kitchen being flooded due to a water leak with water having gone into the flat below causing the ceiling to have collapsed in the flat below. I thus have urgent stuff to deal with along with an insurance claim plus a family to look after too. I thus really value your patience with me- thank you so much! Quote

Missknowall Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Have done all requested of me. When I reset the settings of IE there were alot of things it fixed- too many to list. I did try to copy and paste, but it didn't let me. I am not due to work for this company until Tuesday the 22nd Feb and then the Wed 23rd Feb. I think I might try to see if it has worked on the Wednesday , but have the new laptop ready to take over shouldiI encounter problems again. Will let you know next week. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Thanks for the update, and glad to know that the reset of Internet explorer fixed a lot of things for you. Just for the record, those information boxes don't allow a copy and paste in general for some strange reason. One of these days I will find out why perhaps. However sometimes it is possible to get a screen shot of them which is like taking a photo of what you want anyone else to see. In XP it can be done using the print screen key, however that takes a photo of the entire desktop when all that is wanted is a small box, and is a little more complex to use as it involves more than just the key. It is better to use a small program which you can use to take a picture of just a small area. There are quite a few, but one I like is Mireks MWSnap. You can download it from here= Mirek's Free Windows Software There are three free downloads on that page, and the one you want is the middle one, though you may find the others useful too. Windows 7 has its own snipping tool which does exactly the same, so no need for a third party program with that OS. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. PseFrank Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Just to add to what Nev has said regarding the Print Screen key. As has been said...Pressing the Print Screen key will place a snap of the entire screen onto the clipboard. If you press Alt + Print Screen it will only snap/grab/copy the active window. After using either method you can open Paint, Photoshop, Word, or any editor, and hit Ctrl + V to paste. RandyL Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Once started don't interrupt it. Let it run until it is done In post 12 I stated the above. Let it run. DO NOT turn it off.
