Missknowall Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 As it is a black screen I can't see what is happening to thelaptop- periodically it seems to stop what itis doing and wil only resume when I press the mousepad a sthough to move the cursor. Please reassure me that this is ok and I can reset the router when required. When will I be able to use it again please? I am sorry if you feel I am hassling you- I have just so much stress at the moment and need the other laptop as the rest of the family also use them for work and homework too. What is the risk in stopping the disk check and if minimum- I would like to do as I really can't wait for instance a day or wto , or however long it wil take . Please advise- so many apologes for stressing. Quote

Goku Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Hello Missknowall. A diskcheck, if that is what is still running at the moment, should not take usually more than 15-20 minutes. Even on very large hard drives, it should be done within an hour I guess. Considering the time of your post when you started the scan, I am afraid to say that the hard drive might be on it's last leg. I am no hardware expert so my guess might be wrong but I cannot think of any other reason why the check disk would take so long. And resetting the router WILL NOT affect the disk check so you can do it as many times as you want. What is the risk in stopping the disk check and if minimum- I would like to do as I really can't wait for instance a day or wto , or however long it wil take . The risk in stopping a check disk, especially when it is running on a bad hard disk, is the probability of loss of data. Even on healthy drives, terminating a check disk prematurely can corrupt the boot sector. On bad hard drives, it almost kills the hard drive! So please whatever you do, DO NOT try and end the check disk unless you absolutely have no other option left. And considerig the circumstances, I must ask if you have backed up your data? -- Goku Quote
Missknowall Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 I have backed up the important data- this disk check has now been going since 3.15 am .Please advise how i can stop it and try to get back to whereI was before i started it. Quote
Missknowall Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 Please could you advise how to stop this disk check as i need to restore to be able to use the laptop. Please advise s that i can retain the maximum data on it. This laptop is less than a year old. Why would the hard drive be on its last legs? Quote
Goku Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 (edited) Hello Missknowall. I am afraid but once you start a diskcheck, there is no way you can stop it unless you manually shutdown/reboot the machine. You could do that but be advised, that it will almost certainly kill your hard drive. Sometimes people get lucky and the hard drive works but that is not always the case. I have backed up the important data- this disk check has now been going since 3.15 am That is some good news. Considering the status of your disk, it might be difficult to recover data off it later. This laptop is less than a year old. Why would the hard drive be on its last legs? There are plenty of reasons for hardware failure. The most common being cheap parts used in the manufacturing of products. There is not much we can do to safeguard ourselves against it. Again, if you are ABSOLUTELY desperate, you could try a hard restart and hope that the computer still works. However, if you can still wait a while, then try and wait for Neville or Randy or Frank to come on. They are much more competent than me in such matters and should be able to guide you well. Hope that helps. :) -- Goku Edited February 15, 2011 by Goku Quote
Missknowall Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 Thanks so much Goku- I will wait until Randy/ Neville come on and then take their advise. So many apologies for stressing so much- I have had alot to deal with over the past few days with little sleep too. Quote
Goku Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 No problems Missknowall. We all have been through that at some point and no how stressful it is. Computer problems have a knack of doing that. Hope all gets sorted out soon. :) -- Goku Quote
RandyL Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 If it still has not run then it sounds to me like the drive has problems. Especially considering your other posts. You said you backed up your important files so that is good. If you need more data recovery stop now and await further instructions. If you do a hard shutdown during chkdsk it might mark the drive as dirty. If it does you'll need to use the XP Recovery Console to boot to a command prompt screen. If the XP Recovery Console is not installed you'll need the Windows XP installation disk. Quote We are all members helping other members. RandyL Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Ah Windows 7. You could try a startup repair. How to Use Recovery Environment in Windows 7 - Bootbeta If the computer won't restart normally you can try the startup repair. I'm still thinking the drive is bad though. Plastic Nev Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I am also a bit out of my depth on this one. Shutting down in whatever way during a checkdisk is certainly not good, but may in the end have to be done. As to whether it will get far enough to go down the repair rout when restarted I just don't know. I am hoping one of our other members may have found a way round this problem, as I cannot be sure. Missknowall Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 What I did was- shut the PC down. When it started up again and the notice came up that it was to perform a quick check, I decided to, in quick succession (after having spent hours reading about 'cures' for the problem and armed with various options of steps I can perform) pressed F8, F1 and F2. The laptop then just booted up as usual and I didn't have to perform any of the other tasks. So far so good - I have been using it for a day. I haven't yet tried it with the software as I have had another problem come up on the laptop where Malware was detected (from a facebook link that I yesterday tried to open), AVG detected it and I placed into virus vault. However, everytime I open the laptop, the box comes up with the malware that has been detected. It seems to be the same malware that keeps re-appearing. I place it into virus vault and delete it , but it doesn't seem to permanently disappear. Quote

DSTM Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I just run a dskchk /r and took 9 and a half hrs.Looks frozen but still working behind the scenes. Eventually finished. DSKCHK normally take about an hour. Every time I restarted I couldn't stop it from running. Just have to be patient and let it finish. Quote Confidence, is the feeling I get, moments before I stuff something up.
Missknowall Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 Glad yours finished after 9 and a half hours. Mine was still going on 2 and a half days later. Luckily it did only try to run just the once when I restarted the laptop. I think I have finally managed to get rid of that malware as it don't appear when starting laptop either, thus all I am waiting fo,r st a chance to try the software. I will keep you posted. Thank you again for your replies. I do realise that at the end of the day it is up to us if we want to follow your advice. Fantastic it is, but I bet now and again you are bound to get some pc's/laptops which won't play ball and co-operate. I fully understand that. Quote
seedy21 Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Hello Missknowall, Glad to hear that you got rid of the malware but i would advice you to get your system checked out by somebody in the malware removal team. After all it can come back when you reboot your computer as it can be stored in your system restore points. If you want somebody to look at it just post back.
