Dell email about XP

Hi group,

I got an email from Dell telling me that I can still get a computer from

them with XP up until June 18th. After that, we can't. So does that mean we

will have to settle for Vista if we need a new computer? George told me that

has XP and it takes forever for it to shut down, he does not shut his down..

He is quite impressed that mine is so fast shutting down.

Just about. (Not completely 100% true, but close enough, for most).

Easy. Just go to EBay, (and/or any number of other sources) and buy an OEM

(or even a system builder) version of XP, wipe the system and install XP. If

you bought a new machine right now, any PC, you could run XP on it just fine

until the hardware dies. Probably just as true in five years from now. Or

ten.

Or get Vista. Lots of people use it, it's slowly maturing, it has full

support, and you'll be ahead of the game, once you learn how to properly

deal with all the idiot-proof protections that are built in that most people

consider serious inconveniences (but that I should think MEB would

appreciate no end.)

I will wait until it is absolutely necessary to get a new computer. I do not

plan on updating this one. This one is 8 years old now.

Your choice. As long as you can do what you need to do and stay safe.

George's machine takes forever to shut down for the same reason most

machines take forever to shut down -- lots of crap running in the background

that doesn't need to be. But XP is a more complicated system and it does

take a bit longer than 98, given the same conditions.

Re: Dell email about XP

BTW, if you want an OS that shuts down quickly, get MS-DOS. All you do is

push a button and it's off! Almost instantaneous!
