Why did you install virus software? Sounds like

shooting yourself in the foot!

1. Which antivirus program had you been using?

2. Why did you decide to uninstall it? Did you install another antivirus

program in its place?

3. How did you uninstall it?

Trend Micro. Used the control panel add / remove programs. After that did

not work I deleted the trend micro folder from the programs file. However,

the computer still thinks is installed. The trend micro uninstaller does not

work.

Well, the uninstaller can't uninstall the software if it's not there.

The usual trick is to re-install the software, then use the software's

uninstaller.

If that fails - as it often does with things like Symantec - then you have

to manuall scrub the registry for all mentions of the offending software.

As always, backups are appropriate before undertaking software surgery.

Are you referring to the uninstaller (TISSuprt.exe) mentioned on this

page?:

Gary

Did you disable Trend before trying to uninstall? Uninstalling in Safe

Mode may help. Also you may need to restart the computer to complete the

task.

Another thing when uninstalling is that Start Up items can remain after

the Program no longer is listed in Add / Remove Programs.

Autoruns is a useful tool to look at what loads on Start Up. Others use

Msconfig but I much prefer Autoruns.

A safer way than msconfig to disable / remove unwanted start up items is

to use Autoruns.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,

or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck

you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than

editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that

you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information

about the item selected.

If I recall correctly there is an executable called "tmtool.exe"

(or similar) that you can use to force a de-installation. You may

have to re-install the product in order to gain access to it.

It won't let me reinstall. I get an error message saying I must remove the

existing version first. If I went into the registry and deleted the trend

micro folder would that do the trick? I"ll do a back up first.

Re: Uninstalled virus software but still appears in control panel

Thank you Gerry. I'll give it a shot later. That maybe what is going on.

FYI - When I do a search for Trend Micro on my c drive it cannot be found.

It only appears in the control panel so I am assuming it is not running on my

PC.

Problem: Installation will not continue since I cannot remove an older

version of Trend Micro and it is detecting third-party software.

Notice I said "ALL." There may be hundreds of entries, not all of which are

obvious.
