It might just be the cable you are using.

The USB1 cables are thinner than USB2 cables

This is what

The USB section in control panel says

'The USB mass storage device will function at reduced speed. You must add a

high speed usb host controller to this computer to obtain maximum

performance'?

Cables are cables, USB has 4 conductors. There is no such thing as

a USB-1 or USB-2 cable. It's all marketing, The type of Serial data

USB uses doesn't care about the Gauge of wire used in the conductors.

Do other USB2 devices run at full speed?

If not, you may have not installed the motherboard drivers. Your board

would have come with a CD that has the drivers necessary to enable USB2

speeds.

Both the mobo usb drivers and asus usb download say if i have service pack 1

or more for xp then usb 2.0 should be installed automatically? Whats going

on? Does anyone else own an asus M2NE mobo and get a similar occurance when

connecting flash drives or other devices?

**NO**

I recently came across this when friend of mine was trying to access his

external drive...

he was using an old USB cable that was appox 1/4" in diameter. He could only

access the drive at USB1 speed.

When we switched over to a cable that was approx 3/8" in diamater the drive

was accessed at USB 2 speeds!

It could be the cable!

The other drivers appear to work normally. I Have a printer, usb music

keyboard and a usb mouse but it is harder to notice with these devices and i

dont remember the running low prompt when pluging them in.

There are *chipset drivers for the motherboard* that are often needed to do

this.

Install the chipset driver and see what you get.

These may be USB 1 devices, as they can't benefit from the higher speeds of

USB2.

As it happens, even USB audio interfaces, 24-bit A/D converters, until

recently only used USB1 as the bandwidth of USB2 isn't needed for stereo

inputs. The newer USB2 devices allow more than 2 simultaneous analog

inputs.

You should recheck with devices that you know are USB2.

In the meantime, install the chipset drivers from the motherboard CD.

USB devices run at the lowest speed of any of the involved devices. Your

computer has to support 2.0; any USB hub has to be USB2.0; and the device

has to be 2.0.

Better recheck your measurements. Not even main power cables are 3/8".

Perhaps you meant 1/8" and 3/16". Or maybe you meant circumference, not

diameter.

As far as USB cables are concerned I'm aware of only the length

restriction. Also I made a mistake in stating that USB cables have

only 4 conductors, actually the Mini-USB cable has 5.
