SkylineUK Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Last night something went wrong with my "My Computer" icon. When I ciick on it it now takes over 2 minutes to open up with the list of my drives, etc. !! Once open, browsing files and folders is unaffected, except if I navigate upwards to 'My Computer' it does it again. I've tried deleting and replacing the desktop icon with no luck. I've Googled and found nothing that helps. For the time being, when I eventually got it open, I've dragged shortcuts onto my desktop for drive C, D, and other things I need. These work. I've tried the usual virus scans, defragging, temporarily switching off my Kaspersky, etc. and nothing helps. Has anyone any suggestions as to how to correct tbis strange and extremely annoying problem? Thanks John Quote
RandyL Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 The last time I saw something similar was when the CD/DVD drive had a fault. Perhaps it's having a problem detecting a drive such as the CD/DVD or a hard drive or a floppy drive. You could try disconnecting all drives except the hard drive with Windows installed to see what happens. It also might not hurt to run a memory or hard drive test. BeeCeeBee Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 (edited) Here is a possible fix. Open your task manager (Control + Alt + Delete) open the "Processes" tab and find "explorer.exe". Highlight it and then click end process at the bottom of the window. All of your desltop icons should disappear. Then, while still in Task manager go to "file" at the top and select new task. A box will appear type "explorer.exe" (without the quotation marks ) and then OK. Your icons should reappear. Now the question is whether they will appear in working order. I don't know but they should if there is nothing corrupt underlying the problem. Most icon shortcuts can just be replaced but My Computer in XP is not a shortcut.
