Running 95B on a P166 system. Both Hotmail and GMail lock up

the pc or at best take 10 to 15 min to load.

I don't want to upgrade to 98SE (I have the oem software)

because I don't run any anti-virus and have had _no problems.

 

Need suggestions for a e-mail program. Don't need a

'client', just a simple program to send and receive mail.

GMail and Hotmail are both web-based.

Though I don't use Hotmail...I have noticed that GMail does seem to take a

lot of resources

and has difficulty loading on a lower end machine.

 

Possibly using POP3 and an email reader will work better...

I followed your suggestion and changed to pop3 and to 'standard view' and

gmail loaded somewhat faster. Made a couple of other changes, eg: to have

a copy of incoming forwarded to my WebTv email. I'll try to configure OE

but it's OE 5, so not sure if it would work with gmail. I'm typing this

on a faster machine (MacBook), so will let you know how I made out when I

log to my old (stone age) Win 95.

 

Will look into 'email reader'(?) later today.

BTW...I have both dial-up and broadband access, so I'm using dial-up on

this machine to see before and after with changes in gmail regardless of

machine used. Your changes are faster.

Your computer needs tweaking. I get to both right away, except

Hotmail is now switching to XP/Vista-compatible only database

system so they can go to hell. Fortunately, gmail works just

fine, and can be accessed via any POP3 client avoiding the www

nightmares.

Get f-prot for DOS. In about 10 years I found ONE virus, but

it's still not a bad thing to check once in a while...

 

Anyway, get:

 

npop109win32_EN.zip (size 94 KB)

If you want to use it with your gmail account (you WILL

unfortunately have to configure that via www, but you can do it

on another machine - I did it on my 10½ yr old 95B computer but

it was a bit of a struggle) you will also need to DL and install

the SSL files (put them in the same directory):

 

npopssl002win32.zip (size 540 KB)

 

If you want to use it with a regular POP3 account you may not

even need the SSL files. I have one of those which costs me $15

a year, and I get virtually no spam and no one but my friends

have the address. I got the gmail address for throwaway web

crap, which is what I used Hotmail for before.

 

The installed program is under 200KB (plus less than a meg for

the SSL files), runs like lightning and supports multiple

accounts. There isn't a help file, the author doesn't really

speak English, but there is an English web site for fans/users.

They have actually rewritten the program "with amazing new

features" but their main new feature is that the program no

longer runs on 95. So that's that.

 

If you Google for nPop you will find that English site, it has

tips on setting up etc.

 

You can also ask me here if you have problems. I visit once in a

while - kind of a dead group.

 

I have tried at least a dozen email programs on this machine,

and this is the BEST. It would be well worth $50 but it's free!

I do. But I just LIKE old operating systems and older machines.

I like problem solving (to a degree). I have a paid up annual

account with MSNIA.

I like old computers and old operating systems too.

I've got win95 setup on a 386 and it works fine.

 

As to downloading movies, If you have a question no harm in asking.

Though I've never downloaded movies...I have downloaded a few Linux distros

and they are quite large.

 

I've found that a download manager often is a big help.

My movie problem is multi-part movies.

 

I downloaded a French film from the 60s which was 699 mb in

one file. Downloaded in about 10 minutes or so.

 

If however it had been rar or avi into parts....ie:

avi.001 thru avi.699 is where I'm at a loss.

 

Without using a Newsreader is there a tweek in either Win or

Macs OS that I'm missing. I'm thinking there must be a 3rd

party progrom that isn't an eye candy piece of bloat with 300

options that 99% of users don't use or need.

 

I do try to avoid 3rd party software if there is any way I can

use what came with the system.

 

I know this is way Off Topic, so thanks for any help.

part files, either binary or text etc without seperate action?

 

A program to download either in sequence or simultaneusly.

I have fprot on disk somewhere. Downloaded npop1002win32.zip.

I'll take a look later this evening or tomorrow.

Went to website. No 4.31,.....only 32 bit was 4.31 which does not support

95b.

Have checked my 95b(2.1) PC. Yes it is 4.31.

You may need to update DUN from MS site, DUN14-95.EXE

and update browser toIE5.5. But cant be sure.

Thunderbird 1 and Firefox 1.5 will run on W95B, though paradoxically the

installer won't. To get round this just install on 2000/XP and copy the

program folder over.

 

Pegasus Mail will also work, up to v4.02 I think. The latest won't because

it uses unicode.

My blind friends have been running Eudora for years, and I see the website

(http://www.eudora.com/) still has lots of old versions available

(http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2350hq.html/, then

ftp://ftp.qualcomm.com/eudora/).

 

It seems to have three modes, Paid, Sponsored, and Light;

http://www.eudora.com/download/ says Paid is no longer available for

purchase, Sponsored is only available on the latest version (XP/2000), and "

Older versions revert to Light mode ", which is " Even fewer features

a.. No person-to-person technical support" - which is probably exactly what

you want..

 

 

Of course, there are DOS prog.s, such as the suite Demon built around KA9Q,

and windows 3.1 ones, but I presume you want a _bit_ more than that (-:!

 

Wasn't there a version of Outhouse Distress with W95? (Or at least available

for?)

 

http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=eudora has it from 7.0.1 back to

1.4.4 (0.3 MB).
