When a document is written, does the hard drive record the date and time that it was written?

Does the hard drive have a separate date and time to the computers date and time clock?

I am trying to find a document that was written on a specific date. However, it was deleted. The problem is that I have discovered that the computers main clock was set to a different time zone and date.

Would the hard drive record the correct date and time that the file was written or the time and date that the computer was set to?

Also, will the hard drive record when the time zone and date was changed?

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to fpch.

No. Your hard drive is used to install the Operating System, software etc.

Before you install Windows the hard drive basically a blank canvas.

If you have deleted a document - have you looked in the recycle bin ?

the computers main clock was set to a different time zone and date.

There is a CMOS battery on the motherboard that can cause this problem.

It may need replacing.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi, some confusion here, could do with some more information here as to what you are doing. However trying to see where we are and reading between lines a little, first I will clarify some things.

When ever a file is created the time and date is created with it and yes, when the computer is shut down that file is stored on the hard drive, complete with that time and date. If the computer was out of sync with real time in the zone it is in doesn't matter, if the computer thinks it is 17-2-2011 at 22-00, that will be stored with the file and will not change when the computer is reset to the right time. I hope that helps,

Nev.

If your documents are in the same place then there is a date modified

The easiest way would be if you know the name of the document and just CTRL and F to find it

He does say the document was deleted so I assume he is using one of the file recovery softwares available. Must point out that if any other activity after the deletion, there is a good chance the original document may have been written over, making recovery even more difficult.
