Hi,

I have been fixing my friends PC over the past few days and have come

down to the last problem.

At the log on screen at start up of XP it says 'this is not a genuine copy

of windows' in the bottom right hand corner. This is not the case as the

copy is 100% genuine. I have managed to turn off the small reminder in the

toolbar of the desktop but as yet have not been able to get the reminder off

the log on screen.

I called microsoft today who confirmed it was genuine and put me through to

another department, this department then told me they were very busy and that

i would get a callback over the next 3 days.

I was wondering if anyone could help with this?

Another problem i have is that i cannot update windows from the website (i

take it this is down to it not thinking the OS is genuine), it asks me to

install active x, i accept this but never get the option to run or save, this

meaning i am caught in a loop and can get no further.

If anyone can help at all it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Colin

Re: Not genuine OS error

Hi Colin,

I have seen this error message many times before SP2 is installed. And yes,

I know it is a bit hard to update it without being able to use update.

However, in the meantime use this link:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html

If this is not the case, post back and good luck!

I also encountered this whenever the XP SP2 with WGA is not connected

to the Internet. As part of WGA, it needs to connect to MS and

validate the XP each and every time the XP boots up.

Huh?

What if a user doesn't have Internet?

My 3 machines (including 1 laptop) boot fine even when not connected to

the net. Since I can use the Windows Update site, I'm pretty sure WGA is

installed.

Two of them are now SP3 but they where OK even before that (SP2).
