Ethernet Controller

My computer says Ethernet Controller is not working properly and if I have

the installation disk to insert it and continue. I don't know what that is.

I know what Ethernet is, but what is the controller. I am having tons of

problems with this HP computer. It has XP. It has always been Mr Dependable

until the other night when I tried to download some drivers for a USB cable

to use for my cell phone. I may have gotten a virus. Anyhow, it's a mess

and I'm trying everything I can to fix. Even boot up is weird, pushing F8,

ESC to just get Windows to load. Someone stated I should start up in safe

mode and pick, last known working something. That even messed up. So, what

is Ethernet Controller and why am I now missing it?

Controller is just another word for the card. They mean the ethernet

card in your PC. Be it really a card or a chip on the motherboard or

whatever.

Not sure about why your missing it.

Try device mgr, expand the ethernet hardware tree,or the LAN tree, locate

the device,R.click,properties,locate brand,select,update driver,let xp update

it auto..Or,go to windows update catalog & download drivers,or the mfg web

site & get software/drivers.

USB cables do not use drivers, devices such as your cell phone do.

Boot to Safe Mode > Device Manager.

On the Menu bar click View > Devices By Connection.

Expand the entire device tree and look for any device related to your cell

phone/USB.

If present, Right click on the listed device and in the popup menu click

Uninstall.

Once all is found and uninstalled, close out of DM back to your desktop.

Open either MyComputer or Explorer.

Delete the contents of:

c:\documents and settings\your username folder\local settings\temp

c:\windows\temp

c:\prefetch

Close out of MyComputer or Explorer and reboot.

Post back the results.
