I maybe spent money and bothered you all for nothing.

I just reformatted, and attempted to create an image (after installing

updates, etc). I hoped I could simply create an image and burn it to

a DVD (4.7 GB).

BUT it seems XP takes about 8 Gigs (doesn't that seem high?). OK,

fine. I'll burn it to my external. But it seems to want to burn my

entire 80 Gigs as the image-not just the used amount. Is that right

or am I further misunderstanding something.

You choose the entire disk to image, but it will only image what is

being used.

If you clone, then you will use the entire disk you are cloning to...

even if it's a 500G disk and the disk being cloned is only 80G.

So then, only 8 Gigs? IF I do this, does my external need to be

empty? I'm terriffied of losing all my backed up data, there (only 66

Gigs left).

Ah, I think I see. so Do NOT do this unless I'm willing to lose all

the data on the external.

Only 8 gigs. You can have tons of other stuff on the external as long

as you leave enough room for the 8 Gig image.

Correct. Cloning is for preparing a disk to be the boot/system disk.

the data on the external.

------------------

It would help if we knew what software you bought and intend to use.

Chances are you can still image, with compression, to a DVD.

Remember that the 8 gigs you're seeing for XP include the swap file which

will be compressed to almost nothing.

Why not just go ahead and try to make an image on a DVD? The worst thing

that could happen is it'd fail any you just wasted a DVD-R. No biggie.

Most good imaging programs will span multiple DVDs as necessary anyhow.

Hey there, great idea and actually tried that days ago:). But it

didn't want to do it burn to a DVD, period.

Oh, and got True Image.

Perhaps I am doing something wrong? I would much rather use DVD's.
