Hi can anyone shed any light on "high pcu usage".

Several times a day I get this message popping up on my screen and I dont understand why.

I have cleaned the pc thinking that it could be the reason and although it was really dusty

inside it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I am running XP home with service pack 3 and everything seems to be ok except for this

message.

I dont like borrowing trouble but if this is a problem I would like to try and solve it out before

there is any damage done.

Many thanks for reading this thread and any help would be gratefully accepted

There can be many causes of a high PCU use, programs running in the background that may not be needed, malware which could be a trojan running your computer as part of a botweb, being some of the likely causes.

Can you please let us know what security software you are using, such as firewall, anti virus and antispyware.

Also is it possible to post a screen shot of the message you are seeing please.

Nev.

Hi Nev my security is Norton and as for the screen shot the message only appears for about 3 - 5

seconds

and like it says on my profile i am a dummy when it comes to computers, I wouldn't know where to

begin to "post a screen shot".

If you would care to advise me how to do this I would be very gratefull

Thanks Trazza

A high CPU usage can also mean that you are running low on RAM and when it maxes out, it throttles the CPU cache

How much RAM do you have in the system while XP recommended is 1GB, SP3 needs 1.5GB

Its been a while since I used XP regularly, but I don't recall any warnings ever popping up about high CPU usage. What normally happens when the PC is flat out is the system runs very slowly and sometimes the fan speeds up.

So, what's going on? Open Task Manager, there is a tab called Performance, watch that, see if it stays at 100%, and if so have a look at which process is using the CPU the most.

Also, a screen shot would be really useful, have a look at this vid to show you how to get one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjmbhYwE3T0

as for the warning, you may have some software on the PC that monitors it, I have seen plenty in the past...

do as suggested by Synapse and we can go from there
