Restore Points will not work

Recommended Posts

I am using Win/XP with IE7.

When I try any one of my several restore points, I get a note saying

Restore cannot restore this point. None seem to be restoreable. (My

computer will boot OK, I just can't restore to a desired earlier date).

What's happening, and how can I fix it?

Try in Safe Mode.

If that doesn't work please post details of your anti-virus software,

your anti-spyware software and the firewall you are using.

Hope this helps.

Re: Restore Points will not work

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What

anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall

(if any)?

See http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html and/or

I tried safe mode, but it didn't help.

I use AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus program.

I believe AVG has a firewall Resident shield in it. I do not have a

separate third party firewall.

I have AdAware installed but havent used it for quite some time.

Re: Restore Points will not work

I am not placing any of the software you use as causing problems with

system restore.

What drives / partitions are you monitoring? You should only be

monitoring the partition (usually C) containing your Windows operating?

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/drivedisable.html

Are you using an external removable drive. You will get problems if a

restore point is created when it was connected and the drive was being

monitored and the drive is not connected when you try to restore. This

is why external drives should not be monitored.

Try turning System Restore off to delete all restore points. Next turn

System Restore back on and create a new restore point. Then test by

restoring to your newly created restore point.

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#3

If all else does not get System Restore working properly try

re-installing System Restore:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html

I've seen other posts about this behavior with AVG v8.0 installed. Is it

AVG Free v8.0? Did you upgrade to v8.0 from v7.5?

What anti-virus application had been installed before you installed AVG Free

v8.0? Is it still installed? Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been

installed on the machine?

Re: Restore Points will not work

AVG Free does not include a firewall. Make certain that the Windows

Firewall is enabled!

Give this a whirl:

1. Download a fresh copy of the installer, saving it to your C: drive (i.e,

C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe) =>

http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe

2. Uninstall AVG 8.0 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,

browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've got AVG 8.0 reinstalled,

properly configured, and updated!

Alternately, replace AVG 8.0 with, e.g., Avira AntiVir or Avast4 (also free)

then skip to Step #5 below.

3. Carefully follow these instructions to (re)install AVG 8.0:

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338

Tip: Do NOT install the toolbar (if offered) or either of the email

scanners. Email Scanning provides no additional protection, it's a major

source of corruption and problems in Outlook Express/Windows Mail, and even

Symantec(NAV) says it's not necessary:

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against

viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus

Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive,

including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer

on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum

protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure

that you have the most recent virus definitions.

Source:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002111812533106

4. Configure AVG as you wish via the User Interface | Tools | Advanced

settings

5. Check for and install any available updates.

Avast creates problems with System Restores as I pointed out to you

several weeks ago. I use AVG 8 Free and my system restore works as it

should. This problem may not be related to security software.

Re: Restore Points will not work

I tried one of Gerry's suggestion's and Restore seems to work well now.

Gerry suggested:

"Try turning System Restore off to delete all restore points. Next turn

System Restore back on and create a new restore point. Then test by

restoring to your newly created restore point.

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#3 "

I sincerely thank all of you that worked to help me
