Dear All,

I have updated Windows XPSP2 to SP3 (yesterday), which was downloaded from

MICROSOFT WEB Site. After completing the installation of SP3, system got

rebooted. From then I am not able to see my Login Page. I am being able to

see the mouse cursor on the black screen (Same in Safe Mode also).

My hardware is as mentioned below:

Intel Core 2 Duo Pro, 512 MB, ASUS Mother Board, 160 GB HDD (7200 RPM).

Any one have solution for this problem? ....

Yes, you'll need to get the hotfix from this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948277

The problem described in the KB article has been driving me nuts since late april.

After logon a blank desktop appears. Most of the time I can continue by pressing

Alt+Ctrl+Del again (but not always).

Unfortunately the hotfix is not available for download. How do I get it? (I am a

Technet Plus subscriber, if this helps)

Regards,

-Roger

Note: the OP may be experiencing a different problem.

At the very top of the article you can read:

Hotfix Download Available

View and request hotfix downloads

Have you clicked on "View and request hotfix downloads"?

If you do, there appears some kind of hotfix order form.

;-)

You can also get it from the HotfixShare. It's a good source.

I apparently missed this. I'll have to get used to the new Microsoft

website look and feel.

I downloaded the fix and installed it. Hopefully it will fix my problem.

Thanks,

Let us know if it does. It's good info to share.

Apparently it did: after half a dozen logons after a reboots and another

half dozen logons after a logoff I have yet to encounter the problem

again.

Great. Good to know this fixed your issue and can be recommended to

others.

It appears that I shouted victory a bit too early. The problem (blank screen

after XP logon) popped up again the next day :-(

Meanwhile I have tracked down the real problem. Whenever the problem

occurred, I noticed that there was a program named humgss that would not

respond during logoff. This program is part of Hummingbird Exceed 2007.

I uninstalled Exceed and the problem seems to have gone away permanently

now (OK for almost 3 days). Since I only needed basic X-windows, I have

switched to the freeware package Xming which is working just fine for me.

Two final comments:

- I may not have needed hotfix 948277 after all. Since it does not seem to

hurt either, I have decided not to uninstall it.

- I have not found any other problem reports regarding Exceed 2007 on

Windows XP, so this may not be an Exceed problem but just something

peculiar to my system and/or network configuration.

Regards,

-Roger
