Very slow response to Keyboard entries

Hi! 4 June 2008

My brand new Dell Vostro Notebook with T7250 at 2.4 and 3gb ram running XP

Prof with SP2 has a slow response to keyboard entries: In any application,

when anything is typed on the keyboard, it is echoed after a delay of 2 to 3

seconds. So much so that whole words are typed in, but there is nothing on

the screen. No characters are lost: everything appears after the usual delay.

Would there be any setting in XP that could cause this?

What apps are you typing in? This is "normal" in MSN Hotmail, they always

seem to have a delay. If not try switching keyboards.

All aplications: notepad, word, etc.

In Notepad, for eg, if I type very fast, characters are echoed along with the

kesytroke for say 30 characters, and then they appear long after the

keystroke is made.

PS/2 Keyboard or USB ? - Components in a computer have a polling

hierarchy ( IRQ ). A keyboard should have a higher priority IRQ #. ( a

lower IRQ number ) if it's PS/2 based.

If your keyboard is USB based then it's IRQ will likely be in a higher #

range ( 17+ ) and could be on a heavily loaded Root Hub.

Re: Very slow response to Keyboard entries

That can happen when the video drivers are not properly installed. You

say that this is on a "brand new Dell", I suggest that you call Dell and

ask them.

Re: Very slow response to Keyboard entries

It is a brand new Dell Vostro notebook. Am not sure how the keyboard

interfaces with the MB.

The video card is a NVidia GeForce. Am trying to contact Dell, but they also

seem to have a similar affliction. Shall try again tomorrow.

RE: Very slow response to Keyboard entries

I am having the same problem with a year old Dell 1501. It worked fine until

yesterday. No new software was loaded (intentionally). Is there a new virus

on the loose? Trend Micro and Ad Aware found no significant problems. I tried

to correct the problem by using System Restore but the problem persists.

Thanks for any help with this.
