RayB Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Hi I currently have a recently dead computer so I am going to upgrade. Currently the Windows XP was running on a 478 board with a Pentium 4 processor. I would like to upgrade to a 775 board and an Intel Dual processor. Thing is I need to keep my existing XP boot HDD as I have so much software installed that I could not install again due to lost registration details etc. A clean install is not possible. Question is if I run my original XP installation cd-rom and opt for "repair" will this work? Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 No, Your OS is locked to the components of the computer, you can get away with things like CPU changes and RAM etc, but not a MOBO because it changes the chipset and drivers and devices that are key to windows functioning Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
KenB Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Your OS is locked to the components of the computer, Hi Dalo, As I understand it, this is correct for an OEM installation. With a full retail version, it is OK to re-install as long as the OS is only installed on one computer. This being the case - keeping the HDD with the installed OS on it and changing the motherboard etc would be inline with the EULA. If this is the case then a Repair Install using the original CD would be the way to go. Assuming that RayB has a full retail version of XP. Am I wrong? Synapse Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Your OS is locked to the components of the computer Microsoft allows mainboard changes for repair purposes, but not for upgrade purposes. Reactivation is all that is necessary. Quote
RayB Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 I have the full version of XP but I thought the issue was the technical feasibility of the repair procedure not a EULA problem. Quote

Until you posted with the extra information it was both :) Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! Synapse Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Yes, it will work from the point of view of getting a new board up and running with your old install. There isn't a 100% sure way to say everything will work, sometimes old chipset, sound and video drivers will need uninstalling. They can be tricky to remove after a new board has been installed and may need a manual removal. After the Repair and tidy up install your new video/chipset drivers reboot and all should be well. Sometimes installed software doesn't work correctly after a repair, and needs a reinstall. It doesn't always happen, for example, I've seen Microsoft Office work after a repair and other times not work after a repair and I couldn't tell you why there was a difference. I don't know of any way to work it out before hand. Quote

RandyL Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 With your full retail disks the EULA is no longer an issue. If it was an OEM disk then we may have not been able to help. All is well though. Dalo and Synapse are correct. Nice link Ken. The Elder Geek is a good place of information. Quote We are all members helping other members.
