Windows explorer hangs with external HDD

Running WinXP SP2. Everything's fine until I connect to an external hard

drive over USB. After a few minutes Windows Exporer hangs - have to kill it

with task manager. Usually I get a couple of minutes of use before it hangs.

I have two different external drives - the problem occurs with both of them.

Without the external drives Windows Explorer runs fine. Any ideas??

Hi Clan,

What I would suggest is to see if there are updates for your MB

(Motherboard) and install those.

If there aren't any updated drivers I would suggest that you uninstall

and install again. I am thinking it could be your drivers for your USB

ports.

I hope that helps,

Mike

Please post copies of any current relevant Error and Warning Report as

they appears in the System log of Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,

Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double

click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event

Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of

the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from

Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Re: Windows explorer hangs with external HDD

Gerry,

Thanks for this. I looked at the system log of the event viewer for the time

period when I experienced the windows explorer hangs, but there were no

related errors.

Looks like updating my drivers is the next step.

Thanks,

Chris.

Re: Windows explorer hangs with external HDD

Hi Mike,

I'm running an IBM Thinkpad T42. I went on the Lenovo site and it looks like

there are quite a few driver updates for my machine. I have an important

presentation to give next week, and when I am clear of that I will try the

updates.

Thanks for the advice.

Chris.
