Please don't laugh - but is it safe to upgrade IE6 to IE7? What are the

downsides?

I run Windows XP Media centre 2005 with SP3.

Safe? IE7 has many security improvements over IE6, and it's

considerably *safer*.

A better question would be "is it safe to stay with IE6 and not

upgrade to IE7?" The answer to that question is no.

Not sure what you are scared of, but I have XP MCE 2005 with SP3 and IE7

and WMP11. Granted I did it from a fresh load, but Its all running

fine. Other than the new arrangement of IE7, I like it. I've had

Firefox with the tab feature and I like being able to switch to IE7 when

I have to, and still have that feature.

Ken, what should our preparation be to upgrade from IE 6 using XP Pro, all

updates, and SP3??

Many thanks to all who responded. I could have worded my query better. My

concern was regarding alleged problems some people had experienced after

updating, rather than any "security" aspects. However, I gather from the

generally positive replies that IE7 is the way to go, after ensuring SP3 and

recent updates are installed.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Safe & no downsides...if you install it properly!

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then

STOP!

http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the

installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after

installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional

Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it

to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.
