Hello and welcome.

Firstly,we do NOT email forum members we keep all help on the forum for others to read and learn from and gain help.....

I see your with Virginmedia...

Now I know D-Link routers work well with Virgin..

As you are with Virgin Media you do understand they cap or restrict downloading.....Once you have met a certain limit or they feel you have shared over there limit data allowed they restrict your connection.

Have you updated your wirless adaptor hardware driver?

How close or distance away from the router are you?

To close your connection can drop as is the same for distance away from the router..

As you say your connection is fine and after a few hours the connection drops or appears to disconnect, this as I say maybe your internet usage of Virgin Media, you may not be loosing connection as such but Virgin restricting your internet.

wireless problem

Thanks for the reply.

point taken about the email

some more info:

We have 50meg and the router was supplied by Virgin, I will try a router update

with regards to the data limit:it is sometimes a week or more since I will have downloaded anything. Meanwhile the link drops by itself as and when it wants to

Once it has dropped, i have to restart the computer and then all is well until the next time during which time I will not have downloaded anything

The link is strong, with the router in the loft and us down in the kitchen, my netbook doesnt drop the link

i wonder if the computer itself is not suited to windows 7

one final thing

we have 3 other computers hard wired to the router, with 2 of them being used most of the time and at the same time. Not sure why this would affect the wireless link though

Thanks

The more computers you connect to the wirless router regaurdless if it is wired or wireless this will slow connections to the furthest away or the weaker computer/laptops.

Was the Acer bought with Windows 7 preinstalled?

Or did you install this?

I'm not familiar with Virgin or the router but it sounds a bit like the modem may be failing. Sometimes a failing modem will work after a restart. Sometimes. It's a possibility. Try a direct hardwired connection bypassing the router to see if it's a modem issue.

I have virgin media and the 50meg variant, have you checked in the routers home page to check that the router is acting as a DHCP server (where it dishes the IP adresses to the devices)

it sounds like you are getting an IP conflict
