Hard disk vibration comes and goes

Ok - I dont expect hard disks to be absolutely silent but I have a strange problem which may be to be expected or maybe not! In my system I have put two brand new hard disks - (different makes and sizes though) and each one oprerates perfectly with no noise or other issues - however when both are connected at the same time I get a slight beating noise - like a soft hum that comes and goes with a gap of a second or two between beats - a bit like listening to an old twin engined propeller aeroplane - Could in fact this be what's happening - am I getting an interference beat between the two drives? Certainly if I turn off the power to either drive the noise disappears completely. Never come acoss this before - has anyone else?

Try fitting one in the top drive bay and one in the bottom drive bay.

 

There is nothing wrong with the drives, it is more to do with the drive spin speed, vibrations, mountings and the build and stiffness of the case.

 

You can buy mounting kits to lower noise and resonance, I don't know too much about them, I think Dalo may know more.

I personally wouldnt use the mounting kits for HDDs

 

What case do you use? you often get this when its a 'screwless' design and the rails wobble slightly when the drives spin up, most drives are 5400 or 7200 RPM and you shouldnt get excess vibration from either.

Check they are secured properly
