Cable Internet Installation

I'm getting cable installed for my ISP. I already have cable for TV. My

question is should I have the installer install a new run from the green

junction box or just put a splitter on my current line. I do have about 5

takeoffs for TV's on the current line already.

Thanks, Carol

Let him install the Cable modem with whatever equipment will give both

your TV's and Modem best signal. That's his job to determine if 12

splitters or 1 is better for you or not. You need enough signal to

drive the modem, else you'll get poor internet. He should have

equipment to measure it and make the proper install, else you're going

to have them back with a trouble call.

Your question has nothing to do with Windows. You

might get more responses if you posted it in a networking

or hardware group.

If they'll do it for free, have them install a new cable for the

internet connection. You'll be happy you did, Carol.

Are you paying them to come inside and run cable? If not, they'll

install the splitter at the service entry point and hand you the cable

modem. You'll have to figure out which old TV cable to move over to the

Sorry. Did a search for newsgroups, but I was searching for internet isp's.

Never thought of networking.

Sorry. My prior post got truncated.

I'm guessing that they'll install a splitter at the service entry point

(outside the house, in the patch panel in the apartment complex

basement, or wherever is their access point). A separate line or cable

gets ran into your house, apartment, or domicile and it goes to their

cable modem. That way, if the splitter goes bad (I've had 3 of them

replaced in about 10 years), they can replace it without coming inside

(which can incur a service fee) and you don't have to be around.

If routing the data cable from the outside splitter into your house

requires drilling and more work than just tossing a line over a

suspended ceiling, the installation cost could go up. You might want to

call them to see exactly how much work they will do inside to install

the data cable from the outside splitter to whatever room you want the

cable modem. It might decide whether you route the cable to prep for

their install to reduce costs.

Thanks for the info. I have an existing cable from my satellite ISP. I'm

guessing they can use that line and won't even have to drill.

I apologize. When I first read your reply I was stumped. I just noticed

It might not be desirable to post in HTML but it isn't illegal.

The installer should be able to determine what is adequate. However, the

installer should be able to provide information on how to access the

internet without installing any extra software. That would be my crux for

allowing or not allowing such a connection on my PC.
