Guest GS Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 does a fast card make any difference to the VMs on windows 2008 hypervisa? what about video memory? I am thinking of the 64-bit 2008 hypervisor
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Re: windows 2008 hypervisa and graphic card Hello gs, Sound and video are limited in Hyper-V. Hardware is simulated and not the real underlined hardware itself. For real good performance you have to choose real hardware, not Virtual environments. From another posting from John Paul Cook (MVP Virtual machines): You cannot take advantage of specific sound card or video card capabilities using Hyper-V. Graphics capabilities in Hyper-V are limited to a Vista user experience rating of 1.0. That's all you are going to get. You aren't using the capabilites of the physical hardware, you are using the capabilities of either the emulated or synthetic devices. Also see here about about performance: http://blogs.msdn.com/tvoellm/archive/2008/01/02/hyper-v-integration-components-and-enlightenments.aspx Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > does a fast card make any difference to the VMs on windows 2008 > hypervisa? > what about video memory? > I am thinking of the 64-bit 2008 hypervisor
Guest GS Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Re: windows 2008 hypervisa and graphic card thank you. I suspected as much the video card does not matter much if I install only Hyper-V on a pc. My target environment is a development and lab pc with dual boot: Hyper-V 64bit and vista 64 bit. Hopefully I will be able to set up a responsive and reliable system with 8GB of RAM running at 800 MHz or faster, with either core 2 dual 3 GHz or quad 2.5 GHz, plus 2 arrays of Raid 5 Sata drives, one IDE or Sata system drive I am not sure if I run multiple VMS on the console with dual monitor, what is the minimum needed video graphics capability for responsive switching between VM .. video card makes substantial difference in Vista performance even if the O/S is told to give best performance over appearance. I also would like to know if I were to populate the w2008 Hyper-V 64 bit with 8 GB of RAM, would a 512MB video card like "eVGA GF8500GT 512MB DDR2 With DVI & TV Out " get in the way or I would be better off stay with some 259MB or less card like "eVGA GF7600GS 256MB"? I mentioned the above cards because they are widely available and inexpensive. also they have vista 32/64 support - w2008 is based on vista kernel of sorts, right? If someone tells me I would have better chance iwth 8GB configuration with some combination of hardware, I would very much apprecated. the microsoft site does not give me a lot to work with, I found limited success story with vista 64 bit on Asus forum on P5E ws Pro; also found some from on some intel board. the vendors I know don't guarantee 8GB installation even the Memory maker like Kingston. Hence I really appreciate people telling me about their sucessful stable installed configuration with 8GB at 800mhz or above. if I have to, I would sacrifice the 2 Raid arrays in flaor of one single Raid Arrays
