Errors after SP3 update

I've just updated one of my WinXP systems to SP3. Now when it starts up I

get two error messages, one after the other:

The procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the

dynamic link library wlanapi.dll.

The procedure entry point apsInitialize could not be located in the dynamic

link library wlanapi.dll.

Clicking OK on each of these closes it and then Windows seems to run

normally, but something must be adrift here. Restarting just produces the

same two error messages every time. How do I fix this?

Download the latest driver for your D-Link Adapter/Wireless NIC:

Hmmm. I thought I had the latest driver (it's a system just put together a

few weeks ago), but I'll try that.

I had assumed that the wlanapi.dll was part of the SP3 update, but from what

you say I guess not. I never got those error messages under SP2 -- so this

new driver is just required by SP3?

Thanks.

Well, I guess I'm out of luck. My D-Link adapter is a DWL-G510 (rev. B) and

they only have new drivers for the revision C of that card. I'm assuming it

wouldn't be a good idea to try that.

But thanks, you have identified the problem all right.

Thanks. But on the Microsoft pages with this KB item (a year or more old) it

seems to reference only SP2.

I've queried D-Link about the problem and hope they'll have a fix.

No, I had no problems of any kind before the update. Was the SP3 update a

mistake?

Why "in detail"? The same reason I updated to SP2. Now there's a good deal

of software that *requires* SP2, and I assume that sooner or later the same

may be true of SP3.

Thanks, Robear. I've queried D-Link about the problem as it's evidently

related to their wireless network adapter I have in the system. If they

can't help me I'll try the link(s) you've provided.

Make sure you're running the latest D-Link firmware, too.

No, certainly not. Installing SP3 was a good thing to do.

You're welcome. Plato and I go back a long time. He often gives what I

think is good advice, but other times we disagree--often strongly. And

he's master of the one-line response, omitting any details, and

cutting right to what he sees as the heart of the matter.

Unfortunately, the details are often very important, and without them,

his shots usually land in a toe, instead of the heart.

I would check with the manufacturer of your computer and ask them if

SP3 is compatible with your machine.

I have an HP Media Center PC and I did phone HP tech support, asking

them if I should install SP3 and they said

there were problems and unless I had problems with SP2, do not install

SP3. Again, this advice is not universal for all computers. Check

with the manufacturer! Aaron

Thanks, Aaron.

However, the "manufacturer" of my computer is me.

I've queried D-Link online about the problem twice, and have only gotten the

run-around so far. They are aware of the problem and associate it with their

wireless network adapters after SP3 is installed. They have drivers supposed

to fix the problem with rev. C of this DWL-G510 adapter, but mine is rev. B

and there are no new drivers listed for it. Their site only shows rev. A and

B of the adapter, so it's something of a mystery what the rev. C drivers are

for. They won't give me a Yes or No answer to anything, but just tell me to

phone them (long distance, opposite coast) and since I'm hard of hearing

this is not a good solution for me -- apart from the fact that I suspect I'd

be on hold for a long period with the meter running on my phone bill.

In the meantime, the adapter still works fine as it did under SP2, it's just

those annoying error messages that keep coming up on every restart. I'll

keep querying D-Link and hope for a better answer.

I found a work around solution to the poblem. I deleted LAUNCHER files

WZCSLDR2.exe from the program\ANI\ANIWZCS2 SERVICE and AirGCFG.exe

Program\D-Link\AirPlus G and the startup problem is solved. The D-link

adapter still works perfectly.
