windows backup query

Hi,

I'm just wondering about windows backup. Is it possible to backup without

having to compress, if so how?

If not, could you direct me in the right direction.

All i need is a program that will backup specific folders, that does one

main backup and then adds to the exact same backup i.e. doesn't add any new

folders, since it gets confusing with so many different folders to find what

you’re looking for.

I don't want to compress it, so i can have direct access to the content

that's on the server.

The only option that seems to do what i want is to backup the whole thing at

once, which takes up a lot of time to do this every time you backup...

Sure. It's normally an option in your backup software, not at all

required.

Follow the instructions for your software, and turn off the

compression option.

That sounds like you don't even need a special backup program. Just

copy the files you want to your backup media.

A backup software will normally build a single file. This makes your

first requirement eliminate those programs. They work kinda like a

zip. Yes you can turn off the compression maybe but its still

inaccessible without using the program itself to extract the data from

the backup file.

What you want is a file synchronizer program. Something that will just

copy files from point A to point B. Search and try some of the

following, some are pay and some are free.

Good Sync

Allway Sync http://allwaysync.com/?a=1

Microsoft synctoy

Dirsync by Ants Army

Just a few. I've used them all and as much as Good sync is pay and best

IMO, it creates a backup of every file copied in a SYNC folder and the

history gets huge. Would fill up my thumb drive. Maybe there is a

setting to minimize that but it and the pay stopped me. I use allway

now.

Take a look at these articles.

Re: windows backup query

avoid the ol' backup

method and use a

disk imaging method

like "drive image xml"

with the above you

can create a single file

but i recommend using

the option to create

files that fit perfectly

on a cd.

keep in mind that simple

copying of files is ok if

they are regular user files

but won't work with system

files.
