Dear All

I have a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain, one member server is

constantly losing it's connection to the Domain Controller.

For example, in a 10 minute period here are the outputs of the netdiag

tests:

C:\Documents and Settings\administrator.DOMAIN>netdiag

As you can see one minute it can discover the domain, and the next it

cannot.

Any ideas, as I'm at a total loss on this now!

Did you install the update to turn off the SNP junk? How's the NIC

driver, up to date? Are you on SP2 already?

What most folks don't know is that SP2 includes and enables, by

default, the Scalable Networking Pack (SNP) and it's "features."

Normally it's a download that you'd get from the MS website and

install manually. Being included in SP2, it's caused more harm than

good for many people. A few months back, MS must have decided it was

such a problematic inclusion that they release the Update to disable

the SNP. Do browse KB948496: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948496.

Personally, I would recommend the update if you're not using ANY of

the SNP junk. It may not be the exact remedy for your issue but it is

a place to start since your NIC is up to date.

Aside from that, anything odd in the event viewer on the affected

machine?

Re: Strange Netdiag errors, member server intermittantly loses contact with DC???

Hello Conrad,

Remove the external DNS servers from the NIC settings (193.38.113.3 154.32.107.18)

I assume the addresses are from your ISP's DNS server. INternal in your domain

use ONLY domain internal DNS servers. For the connection to the ISP's DNS

you have to set FORWARDERS on the server properties in the DNS management

console.

That's a good suggestion.

Re: Strange Netdiag errors, member server intermittantly loses contact with DC???

Thanks Meinolf.

I reconfigured DNS as suggested, and also changed the default gateway to our

internal router, which now forwards onto the external router.

This has resolved all the netdiag errors :)

Regards

Conrad

Re: Strange Netdiag errors, member server intermittantly loses contact with DC???

Hello Conrad,

Nioce to hear, thanks for the feedback.

P.S.:Additional you should also check with dcdiag /v and repadmin /showreps

for errors. These 3 tools you should run on regulary base once a week or

so, to make sure the domain runs correct.

Best regards
