I downloaded the service pack 3 a few weeks ago, and since I got a few errors

when booting up Windows. Sometimes it boots, sometimes and m,ost time it

does not. Not sure if it is becuase service pack 3...This was the only

change I made other than uninstalling old norton and installing AVG 8.0, but

worked fine since the last few weeks.

Sometimes when I am able to get on my computer, it reboots, then states

there is an issue and boot usuing last known configuration or run normally or

in safe mode etc.

I try all of them and it just keeps starting up to this screen everytime.

Once in a while I see an error stating

Windows/system32/drivers/ntfs.sys is corrupted ot missing.

I have also seen this message with...

isapnp.sys

and

pci.sys

missing or corrupted.

I tried to put my Windows disk in and boot from there with no luck...it goes

to the main windows screen showing bar loading and a quick blue screen then

re-boots.

I tried to install windows again, and do a repair but it asks for an

administrator password. I do not know this. After 3rd attampt, you have to

control/alt/delete/ out of it.

Any help please ? I would like to rest the bios admin passowrd to nothing,

and try to do the repair if I can not get anything to boot up. Printed a

buch of files from teh net for info, and maybe be service pack 3 errors. and

as far as the admin, I think they said to remove the battery and tried this

before to no avail.

What is the name of the Norton application you uninstalled (e.g., Norton

360; NIS 2008; NAV 2005)?

Did you uninstall it before or after you installed SP3?

After uninstalling it, did you then run the Norton Removal Tool?

When you installed SP3, what anti-virus application or security suite was

installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What

third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running when

you installed SP3?

Re: Windows XP Errors

not sure if it was before or after SP3. I think before.

I had Norton NAV 2005, virus definaitions were up, uninstalled using windows

uninstaller, and installed AVG 8.0 everything was working fine. I do not

know about the norton removal tool

I had Windows Defender, and windows firewall running. Only other thing was

recently installed a new version of zonelabs, but I disable it, and never use

it.

Pretty sure it may have been norton and older avg, when installed then when

new 8.0 avg came out, i unstalled norton first then uninstalled avg 7.5 then

installed avg 8.0 as instructions said to do.

But everything ran fine for a week, after SP3, then ocasional issues turned

into this...cant log on anymore.

I bought the hard drive a few years ago, i hope it is not that.

debating on running repair from the install, not the repair console becuase

i can not get in without admin password.

Re: Windows XP Errors

You could try SP3 uninstall, however, uninstall SP3 may not correct

some corruptions of files/registry that may have occurred. You may

need to do a System Restore pre SP3, clean your computer of all AV

remnants (particularly Nortons using their removal tool see

http://tinyurl.com/23rxpt ), then try reinstalling SP3 in Safe Mode,

then re-install whatever AV.

Next time, wait at least 6 months before you upgrade Windows to the

See if running the Norton Removal Tool helps at all, Bob:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

[Discussion: http://windowssecrets.com/comp/080207#story1]

NB: Before running the tool, look to see if LiveUpdate is listed in

Add/Remove Programs. If it is, uninstall it & reboot before running the

tool. Reboot after running the tool, too.
