Guest Harvey Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Running Win98 (NOT SE). While reinstalling the Dial Up Networking and Server, I accidentally overwrote a newer file with an older one. (I said No instead of Yes.) Didn't catch the filename so it's gone. How can I find out and update that file? I tried "Windows Update" which worked last time I tried, even long after MS stopped supporting or updating Win98. Is there now no way to bring Win98 up to date (as of 2006 or whenever they stopped)? Except for the user prompt, Win98 has no way to inform you after the fact what you agreed to. You will probably have to wait for an error message for one of your apps, and then reinstal that app or device. Hard drives are now so cheap that many of us copy all C: or at least all C:\Windows to a second hard drive at convenient intervals, e.g. once a month. Information at http://www.xxcopy.com explains how to do incremental backups. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada)

I still say Win98SE is the best OS ever produced by Microsoft. But the first version of 98 was just a glorified Win95. What file did you overwrite? Someone could send it to you, but it might be hard to find anyone that is not using 98SE. Dont you have a backup? That file should be there..... I'm not sure where to find the updates to Win98 anymore, but be careful. There are some that contain non-MS stuff, and at least one of those can be destructive. Unfortunately I can not recall the name of that file. It forced me to restore Win98 from my backup.
Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Re: Windows Update for 98 really all gone? You'd have to know what the file is, first. Anyway, you generally do NOT want to overwrite newer files with older ones from the Windows CD when there's a question like that. The files you have to worry about are the ones where you said, "Yes" to that prompt. The ones you overwrote were Windows Updates, mostly (though you may have gotten them elsewhere.) I have a 2-CD set of Updates. The first CD is a copy of Microsoft's own Security Updates CD from Feb 2004. The second CD contains all Windows Update issued after that time that apply to Windows 98, 98SE and ME. Note that I include ONLY Windows Updates that I downloaded directly from the WU Catalog. The CD set would allow you to reinstall everything that can be reinstalled. I ask $3, check or cash, to cover costs. Write to updates_at_grystmill.com -- Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Re: Windows Update for 98 really all gone? Let's see... To upgrade to Windows 98 SE it would cost several dozen dollars (unless Harvey went underground.) Then, because we all know that upgrading in place (running Win98SE Setup over an existing installation, whether Win95 or Win98) tends to leave lousy results, with much worse issues involving the very thing he is trying to cure today, Harvey would have to back up all his personal data, make sure he had everything he needed on hand, and then reformat his system, install Win98SE, update it, install all his apps (which perhaps can't be found anymore?) Harvey doesn't know what file needs replacing, now. In fact, if he wrote what he wrote correctly, it's the files that he DID overwrite that are the problem, not vice-versa. You find Windows Updates at same general location they've always been. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com As Harvey noted, that now redirects to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com -- Gary S. Gotta get it from Windows Update or from the Security Updates CD of Feb 2004 or from me or from some trusted location. I checked this one out and it seems kosher. I did a full compare between this one and the one in the Security Updates CD from Feb 2004.: ..http://www.filewatcher.com/m/TelnetUp.EXE.149984.0.0.html I get prompted for each one twice, once for DUN and once for VPN. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Re: Windows Update for 98 really all gone? I will remind you and anyone else that the OP started out by being rather emphatic that it's a Win98 Gold machine that is being discussed. Lots of MS patches have that same system. The file, once installed, needs to be named the same whether for 98 Gold or for SE (or even ME), but that's a PITA when packing up a patch, since it would require additional folders to keep them separate. I have brought a second Win98FE computer into the picture. Either W98FE machine can dial to the other or to the WXP. But the WXP cannot dial to either of the W98FE computers. At the moment I have yet another Win98_SE_ computer sprawled on the floor. I am trying to dial in to the main Win98FE computer, but it has been stuck at "Answering..." for 28 minutes already (as I type this). It just keeps sending and receiving bytes (over 160kB each way so far). So that's yet a new problem/symptom. Next I will try FE -> SE. BTW, does anyone know if it has ever been done? That is WinXPHome -> Win98FE without using VPN or any 3rd party SW? I have been searching Google and Google Groups and have found a few who have tried, but have not found anyone claiming success. (I don't give up easily.) Harvey > > "Harvey" <harve...@juno.com> wrote in message > > news:ff42e013-3563-41e4-8c95-b2ea9041087a@56g2000hsm.googlegroups.com... > > > On Jun 11, 11:53 pm, "Gary S. And now calling the sprawled out Win98_SE_ from the WinXP Dell is just like calling my main Win98 desktop computer. Dies asking for Username, Password and Domain, with error 691 as before. The only tools we really got have to come from you, so be verbose about it sooner. permit only MS-CHAP v2 authentication via settings in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826157 use HyperTerminal instead http://modemsite.com/56k/duns691.asp and 15,800 more or less other hits if those two fixes didn't get you going right away. As to the files issue, consult RNA.INF file for creating a delete file list under [RNASERV] and [RNA] section's CopyFiles lines. For example, under [RNASERV] section you can see that the section MS_RNASERV_SYS_CopyFiles is pointed to and it only has one file listed: rnaserv.dll which should be added to the list of files to be deleted or at least double checked for their installed version against what versions are available from your cab files. Once you have the file list made you could delete them manually and then uninstall Dial-up Server and the like from Add/Remove Programs|Windows Setup tab, Communications area. Reboot and then reinstall all those items which should get you all new files to start over with. Include VPN, HyperTerminal, and DUN while you are at it. However if you have installed higher versioned files from say the 1.4 DUN update that I pointed you to then those files may NOT be overwritten by the "uninstall to re-install" file renewal technique. There is a good chance that the 1.4 DUN files will just sit there and NOT be renewed at all, so you should go by the list made earlier and manually double check that the version you got is the version you want for all files on the list. It might be easier to just flatten the machine and start over as Gary puts it. Finally, from the Network applet in your Control Panel, remove all items and only add back in your chosen Primary Network Login choice. Reboot. Then add back only the minimum devices required for your system. I don't why this works - but it does many times when nothing else seems to be working. > > > > > > "Harvey" <harve...@juno.com> wrote in message > > > > >news:ff42e013-3563-41e4-8c95-b2ea9041087a@56g2000hsm.googlegroups.com.... > > > > > > On Jun 11, 11:53 pm, "Gary S. Guest Dan Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Re: Windows Update for 98 really all gone? <snipped for length concerns> The interesting thing is the poster mentioned Windows 98 Gold originally but also stated that the OP was working on a Windows 98 Second Edition machine. It sounds like the OP has his hands full. I know I always get confused if I am working on more than one project at once due to my learning disability.

It's tough for anyone to keep the various versions of some files sorted properly. I can't blame anyone for that except MS itself. However, they did write an installer that does seem to pick the right version among many to install on a per OS basis. I guess that's good enough. Looks like I've got the right version of VIP.386, anyhow. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, Should things get worse after this, PCR pcrrcp@netzero.net
