Guest George_222 Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 A silly but annoying problem has started with 3dpipes (sspipes.scr) screensaver. It doesn't run properly. If I try to run it, all that happens is the pipes appear for about 1 or 2 seconds and then the screen goes black and the pipes reappear etc, i.e. it doesn't draw all the pipes for a decent period of time like it used too. All other screen savers run OK. DXDIAG says all is OK Running WXP-SP2 I know its silly but I hate things like this and am worried it may be a 'starter for ten' for something worse. Any ideas please? Thanks
Guest Paradoxdb3 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 RE: Problems with screensaver I'm no wizzard, but I'd try a new sspipes.scr file. I can send you the one that's on my system. Just a suggestion. After all, if everything else is working fine, then I'd say it MUST be that particular file. Anyway, let me know if I can help you out. Guest George_222 Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 RE: Problems with screensaver Thanks for the suggestion/idea. It gets worse :-( A friend also has XP-SP2 and his sspipes version was the same as mine. He sent me his version and a DOS FC shows the files have no differences. And indeed, when I ran his file it has the same problem on my PC (worked fine on his). However, I also have a V old W98 (don't larf ;-) machine and it has 3dpipes on it. Its a much older version and much smaller, but when copied to my XP machine it ran fine. My XP-sspipes appears to run OK, but the screen clears in seconds (1 or 2) before restarting drawing the pipes, it used to run for much longer. Is there a timer setting with this screensaver that I've missed? Only a guess but could this be a registry fault? does a screensaver store stuff in the registry? It seems like the setting for the 'time to run' has been reduced. Is it likely that something else on the PC could clash with this screensaver, but not any other screensavers? Guest Paradoxdb3 Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 RE: Problems with screensaver Are you using a laptop with an additional monitor? If not, try a screen resolution change. Are you currently set to the highest resolution? Try a google search for the problem. I found something you can look at. Try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325550 Hope that helps. Oh, and as far as registry entries, I'm pretty sure that the registy contains a list of the screensavers only, but the screensavers themselves do not store info in there. Guest George_222 Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 RE: Problems with screensaver No its a desktop PC running at native res of a 20" TFT monitor. I did try a Google search and couldn't find anything that seemed to match the error. Unfortunately, the one you found isn't the problem. The screen saver appears to run OK, it just clears the screen too quickly so the pipes don't build up. It used to run fine. After I mentioned the registry, I plucked up courage and ran Regedit and did a search for 'sspipes'. As you say, it didn't really seem to show anything specific, settings wise. But I'm no Reg expert. I'll keep investigating and in the meantime use a different screensaver. I guess it may be clashing with something else I've loaded, but what, I've no idea. I have run an updated AV and Spyware check and it all comes up clean. The PC is also Windows patched up to date. Thanks for the suggestions though.
