Startup Error Message

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Lately when I start or restart my computer it stalls at the startup

screen. The message is cut off on the left side of the screen. What I can

see of the message is:

S ROM checksum error

ecting floppy drive A media...

ert system disk and press enter

I'm guessing it's asking me to insert a system disk into my floppy drive,

but why? I do not have a disk in the drive.

Thanks,

Carol

Since you reference a floppy drive, I'm going to guess that this is a

desktop computer. If it is a laptop, please post back.

In order to see the entire error message, use the buttons on your monitor to

position the screen.

In the meantime, replace the CMOS battery that is on your motherboard. This

is usually a small, coin-shaped battery. You can buy these batteries at

office supply stores, places like Target, hardware stores, etc. They cost

under $5.00, usually for a multiple pack. You will turn off your computer

and unplug the power cord before you do this. Then after you've replaced

the battery, go into the BIOS and set the date to the correct one.

If replacing the CMOS battery doesn't fix the entire issue, adjust your

monitor screen so you can post back with the full text of the error

message. Also please remember to include information about your computer;

i.e., if it is a desktop or laptop, approximate age, make, specs, etc.

Thanks Malke. Will try the battery. I did replace it once a few years ago.

and yes it is a desktop. Had it built. Will post the specs if replacing

the battery does not work.

I guess I spoke too soon before. I replaced the battery and it is still

doing it. Here is the full message I get.

BIOS ROM checksum error

Detectingecting floppy drive A media...

Insertert system disk and press enter

I have to keep pushing the restart button on the machine til it decides to

start up.

It is a desktop that was built by a local shop.

2.67 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4

Board: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-8SQ800 1.x

Bus Clock: 133 megahertz

BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. F5 02/20/2003

2 G RAM

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 [Display adapter]

If you are getting the error after replacing the battery, then the issue

lies with the motherboard. Contact the local shop or it's time to replace

the box. Going on the specs, it's pretty elderly.

Just a heads up. It turned out to be the power supply. Had that replaced

and it seems to be working OK.
