Guest Zaur Bahramov Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Hi! I've noticed that in the company where I've recently started to work in servers hard drives where never defragmented. Servers (windows 2003) are mounted on Vmware ESX Servers. I've tried to defragment hard drives using the windows defragmenter, but on some server, especially with huge files (over 100 Gb database files on partitions with about 200 Gb) some files where not defragmented. So, I'm now considering purchasing a third-party defragmenting utility for doing this. Does it worth investment or most would use the standard defragmenter? I like Diskeeper, besides, native windows defragmenter is a reduced part of Diskeeper. Does it worth investment though? Please, advise, what methods do you employ for this task? What software is betetr for server machi9nes in terms of disk defragmentation and does it worth such investment or no? Your advices are greately appreciated! Thank you very much! Zaur
Guest Justin Rich Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Re: Defragmenting hard drives on Windows Server 2003/SQL Server Personally I like Diskeeper and have been pretty pleased with it when used on highly fragmented systems. If this is just a SQL server there are perhaps some other things you could do to help with performance, and Diskeeper may not even help much after the initial defrag. Defrag is great for file servers (or any server where files are being written/modified/deleted often) but it cant do a whole ton for SQL itself. Aevin Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Re: Defragmenting hard drives on Windows Server 2003/SQL Server You may find some of these white papers dealing with defrag of servers, from the Diskeeper site useful. Found them just recently, so I haven't finished reading all. http://downloads.diskeeper.com/pdf/InvisiTasking-White-Paper.pdf http://files.diskeeper.com/pdf/Virtualization_Performance.pdf http://files.diskeeper.com/pdf/SQLdefragmented.pdf Hope this helps. Guest Zaur Bahramov Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Re: Defragmenting hard drives on Windows Server 2003/SQL Server I've downloaded a trial version of Raxco PerfectDisc 2008 with ESX bundle. I've noticed that some options are more advanced and also, other that it offers more convenient payment option (per esx host and not per server), it also offers multi terrabyte disks. In case of Diskeeper I would have to pay 999 usd for enterprise option. What are pros and cons for PerfectDisc?
