Win XP home booting configutations?

How many different boot configurations does XP keep and how are they identified? I have an older

ABIT NFS7 v2 home built system that runs great most of the time. But about half the time it's good

other times Nort 2007 now 2008, AVG, and Avast errors out on virus scans repeatedly on the same

load also Spybot or Ad-Aware full scan hangs, forcing a reboot. I have found that if I do not scan

the windows folder the virus scans and Ad-Aware full scan work. Please don't say reload the system

as I have many TSR's and tweaks on this system that I never could duplicate it again. The system

was running great until 2 months ago when a memory stick started throwing errors. The problem was

soon caught & repaired but I think the damage was done to some boot configurations. If I could

identify the bad boot configurations and remove them I think things would return to normal. Any

help on where different boot configurations are keep & how they are identified would be greatly

appreciated.
