That's unusual for it to not even display the BIOS after the SP3 install. - Thee Chicago Wolf

If you can't even get the system to POST, it has nothing to do with the OS. Physically detach the hard disk and see if the system POSTs. If it does, replace the hard disk. If it does not, consider your warranty options with Dell. HTH -pk
Guest Michael Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 RE: SP3 on Dell XPS, I NEED HELP :) Hi there, I have have just spent over 250€ and 5 days of time because of installing Service Pack 3 on my Dell Dimension 9200 (Windows Media Edition 2005). After updating to SP3 every program began to slow down or crash! I finally got to speak to someone from Dell, and they told me that they are aware of "Issues" with SP3, and have received many calls and complaints...in fact the giy from Dell said the same thing happened to him! He told me there is no solution to the problem and that I should not try an update to SP3. So where does that leave me and my computer? Dell should have sent an e-mail to all customers that were at risk and warned them. They (Dell) knew there was a problem...and ignored it! They are quick to try and sell us new stuff all the time via e-mail. So I guess this issue with SP3 may never be corrected. It is a pain always having to keep my eye on the updates now...as now there are updates coming through for SP3!!! Very few people are having problems with SP3 when installed correctly. I have had two Dells and their tech support *ucks. If SP3 was downloaded with an anti-virus, or anti-spyware, program running, you may have a bad installation. From: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsxp/cc164204.aspx * If the configuration of your antivirus software prevents certain system files from being changed, SP3 installation might fail. Try temporarily disabling your antivirus software. You can usually do this by right-clicking your antivirus program icon (which typically appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the computer screen) and clicking Disable. * If you disable your antivirus software before you install the service pack, be sure that you are aware of the risks involved, and be sure to enable it after the service pack is installed. Remove SP3 via Add/Remove Programs, reboot and download and install it again. Before you do, turn off your anti-virus and any anti-spyware programs such as Windows Defender. If you use a third party firewall, disable it and turn on the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel for the installation. Once SP3 is in and working, you can enable the third party firewall and turn of the Windows Firewall. Do not keep both running.
