Automatic Updates won't turn on

I am having trouble getting the automatic updates to turn on so it keeps

telling me that my computer might be at risk. I have gone into the Microsoft

website to get help but when I did what it said I received an error

#Ox79969422.

I emailed support and they advised me to post this help message on the

Microsoft Newsgroups.

Any help you can gve me will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Automatic Updates won't turn on

Marilyn,

* Right * click the My Computer icon, either on the Desktop or the Start

Menu, and choose Manage

In the left frame, click the plus sign next to Services and Applications

Click on Services to highlight it

In the right frame locate Automatic Updates

Click on it

Now click the Start the service link just to the left.

Did the service start ... was there an Error 1508 ?

IF the service can start, then click Apply, OK and close the services

console.

IF not and the 1508 error came up, then that's a strong indication that

the system is infested with a malware known as Vundo/Virtumonde.

If that's the case then suggest you seek assistance at a reputable

anti-malware forum. Please read the guideline of the forum of your

choice prior to posting there:

After the system is cleaned up, if the AU service still won't function,

then go here:

http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=13656

Download the AU|WU Reset Tool from the link on the bottom of the above

page and save it.

After the download completes, close all open programs and browsers.

Now run au_client_toolv77a_redist.exe

Restart the system.

AU should now be running.

Re: Automatic Updates won't turn on

IF you've already scanned the system for the presence of Vundo and it is

not resident, then see:

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive

an "Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP

or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896224

If no joy:

The Automatic Updates feature is unavailable or you receive an error

message when you try to enable this feature on a Windows XP-based

computer: “We are sorry the Security Center could not change the

Automatic Updates settings”

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919745
