Guest Justin Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Is there a way to go about de-registering my OEM copy of Windows XP that came with my Gateway M320? Or shouldn't I even bother?

No need to bother. It's locked to that machine anyway. Restore the system to factory out-of-the-box condition with your recovery disc and sell it.

No, you can't and shouldn't bother trying; OEM copies are tied to the machine they came with. The license lives and dies with that system. HTH -pk

Nope. OEM licenses stick to the first computer on which they are installed. When you sell the laptop, you lose that OEM's license.
Guest Ron Badour Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Re: Selling my Laptop I concur with PD43's response; however, you need to take it a step further if the laptop has sensitive data that can be easily retrieved with inexpensive software. Once the partition has been formatted and the system reinstalled, defrag the drive. Then use a program to overwrite the "blank" areas of the drive that can still contain sensitive data. Eraser: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ Freeware that overwrites the "blank" data on a hard drive. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2008 "PD43" <pauld1943@comcast.net> wrote in message news:kj5154hdhephkuqdtpfg5cmb3adp0m54jt@4ax.com... > Justin <Justin@nobecauseihatespam.com> wrote: > >>Is there a way to go about de-registering my OEM copy of Windows XP that >>came with my Gateway M320? >>Or shouldn't I even bother? > > No need to bother.
