Help , Malware - Anti virus conflict

Hi , I really need help with my computer – Ive had help off this site before and know you lot know your stuff , so heres my problem .

I think Ive wrecked my computer by putting anti viruses on to it ???

the faults with it are

1/ frustratingly slow operation – with pale blue circle “thinking time “ icon spinning for ages

2/ a pale fogging screen with ghosting images when 2 or more windows are open

3/ pages and sites all struggling to open then POW they all open at once and I get 5 seconds of normal use then back into slow gear again.

The Reason could be.....

1/ I have a anti malware programme running “Malware Bytes Database ?

2/ I also have Mcaffee 2011 running (or trying to , because it keeps jumping from RED at risk warning real time scanning is off – to Green OK your computer is secure)

It was OK before Mcafee so thats probly where the fault lies – but if I uninstall Mcaffee or the malware I wont be peotected – So what should I do ?

The Mcafee was the last go of 3 on the disk – so does that mean I,ll have to spend £30 to buy more anti virus ? I don’t really want to if it aint gonna be compatable.

Is there anyway to get these two to run quickly and keep me secure .

What should I do ???

My operating system is windows vista home .

Step 1

Download one of these programs to your desktop:

• Avira AntiVir ....installation guide Here
  
• Avast free
  
• MS Security Essentials ... see note* ...installation guide Here
  

 

Note*:

Upon installation MS Security Essentials will check that your OS is a legal copy.

 

Now uninstall McAfee, plus any other Anti Virus program you have installed on your system.

Run the installer for the new AV and install/update it.

 

 

Step 2

 

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

• Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  
• It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  
• Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  
• Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Which Antivirus and Antimalware programs to run on your computer is subjective. Other members here will almost certainly have their own ideas about what is the best protection to install on our computers.

 

One of the resident malware experts may be able to give more detailed advice. I am not one of those experts, but you are obviously having some problems at the moment, so here's my opinion...

 

You do not need to spend any cash at all to protect yourself. There are many free programs that can be downloaded that do a good job.

 

Antivirus: My personal choice is Avast (Free version)

Note: Only use the Avast Free Antivirus (59.72MB) link.

 

This is a resident antivirus program that runs in the background whenever your computer is turned on.

 

Note: You must never have more than one resident antivirus program running at the same time. And the experts may advise you to only have one installed at any one time. (They interfere with each other)

 

Malware Protection: My personal choice is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free version)

 

This is whats known as an on demand program...this means it only runs each time you start it.

Note: Only use the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (7.38MB) link.

 

My suggestion would be to uninstall Mcaffee and any other antivirus programs and give the programs I mention a try.

I've always had alot luck with AVG. Its free to download http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free and I've known computer repair people recommending it.

AVG has gone downhill a lot recently..... that's why i've stopped recommending it.

Hi - Thanx for all the brilliant and helpfull replies , Particularly the avast . But I,m having uninstalling the Mcaffee any tips or help on uninstalling Mcaffee much apreciated. I run windows Vista home basic - P.S. please excuse the long interval between me asking my orig question and acting upon your answers but it ran Ok for a while , but lately its getting unbearable. Will get my finger out - once I know how to uninstall, MCaff. cheers chris

If you are having problems removing McAfee, give the McAfee remover a try:

 

Download it from:

http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=65930&t=0&i=1

 

wait a couple of seconds for the MCPR.exe box to show, then click to save.

save to your desktop

then close all programs and right click the icon and select 'run as administrator' to run the remover.

 

You may have to reboot the system after running the remover, once rebooted you should be able to install your new AV.

:D Appears to have all gone OK - faster opening , and Its seeing the remote mouse and keyboard again like it used to. Will run it over the weekend and check back if any probs - but all went like clockwork , thanx ;)

Glad everything went ok and the system is running better now.

Good idea to run it for a few days and see how it goes.
