Guest bkran Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 As stated at the subject of the post I have a windows 2003 SBS SP2 server which has the behabiour stated. When shadow copies are created the whole system freezes, mouse keyboard not responding and users get disconnected from file shares and exchange mailboxes. I reprodused the error by manually creating a shadow copy so this is the case. I have to add that this server had its disks replaced lately and from a total size of 150 GB it now has a total of 900 GB disk space as its only partition. System was moved with the use of an imaging software to the same hardware ( only the disks on the raid controller changed ) so it basically had no problem with the change except this. Still its used space is atm 145 GB. Its an older system ( P4 with a server board, 4GB of ram ) but it doesnt have any applications installed except a well know antivirus suite so this shouldn't a performance problem. Any ideas ?? Thanks in advance

Guest bkran Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Re: Shadow copies causes server to hang ... First of all thanks for your response. I read the articles you suggested but still, none of them is the case. I have no problem with the creation of shadow copies, this part is working fine. its just that the system is non-responsive at that minute ..... For the moment I have changed the schedule so the copies are created after hours so it doesn't affect the users but still an open issue.... Part of the problem is the size of our shadow copy - 500GB. We scheduled it to run twice a day, but once in a while, it hangs up on us. I've isolated that it hangs especially badly when people are copying large amounts of data to the server at the time it runs. People get knocked off the network/mapped share. It causes Outlook to freeze. Have you heard any other solutions? One other thing - when someone is performing a search, and selecting the large drive/folder, the system hangs as well. We've seen similar behavior with Google Desktop. It might be a controller or I/O problem, I'm not sure...
