Windows 7 laptop running on a real ' go -slow'

Hi,

 

My laptop seems to be running on a ' go slow'. There is a real time lag between typing and the words being printed. Also, it is really difficult to scroll- painfully slow where it just doesn't continuosly scroll. I am unable to use it for work. My other laptop though is fine- that is also windows 7.

 

Thank you so much for all the advice you have given me over the year. I wonder when I will be pc literate enough to be able to sort out my own problems, but also to be able to help others? Sorry to always be ' all take'

please post hte specs of your laptop.

is the laptop getting warmer then normal, is the slowness all round or just on the internet.startup. maybe you need to update your graphics driver to fix the juddering scrolling. this could be numeorus things please can you elaborate more.

It is a Hewlett- Packard, Presario CQ56 NOtebook Pc,Celeron ( R) Dual Core, CPU T3500 @, 2.10Ghz 2.09 Ghz, memory is 2.00 GB, windows 7 Home Edition - 64- bit. It doesn't overheat . It is painfully slowwhen trying to load internet pages and when typing on internet pages e.g facebook or on my work pages which are via the internet. Also, painfully slow to scroll. I hope thsi helps- thanks

Next thought then is there something hogging processes. First question is security. Firewall, anti-virus, or anti-spyware, are they all the same products on both machines?

If all the same then the slow one may be infected, have you scanned with antivirus and antimalware?

Let us know what you find in that area, then we can go further.

One thing that may help us would be an idea of what is running in the background that maybe hogging resources.

Open the Task Manager ( Click start, then type in taskmgr) click on the processes tab, do this on both the good fast machine, and the slow one, see if anything is running on the slow one that isn't on the fast one, let us know if you find any big discrepancy between the two machines.

Thanks for the suggestion Plastic Nev- however, I think I have solved the problem........I had too many tabs open at the same time- around 10-11- no wonder. After giving up on trying to sove the problem , as I had done a full scan , but nothing found, I decided to clear as many things out - disk defrag, clean-up , temporary internet files etc. However, I do these on a regular basis anyway.

 

You see, when I use firefox I tend to 'restore my old session' , but this time I decided to start a new one and the ' problem ' seemed to have resolved. Do you think this was it too?

A common problem with Firefox is use of memory, and the more tabs open the more it uses, therefore slowing everything else. I use Firefox myself but never keep more than two tabs open, if I need more, say for researching something and cross referencing, I will close them as soon as I have finished.

So your discovery and fully closing tabs is most likely the answer.

Could I please ask whether you experts think that having loads of 'firefox favourites' would also slow down the laptop?

Favourites should not slow down any browser to my knowledge. They are simply shortcuts and nothing more.

 

For instance I have a IE backup file of favourites/bookmarks that contain thousands and it is a small 461kb file. To load a small file like that would take a millisecond or less.

 

It's programs that want to run at startup that slow the boot proccess. Not a file that simply reside on the hard drive.

 

We really do appreciate you posting both your problems and your fixes. Not only do you learn but so do others as you said. By the way I'm constantly learning by reading everyones posts including yours.

 

That is the nature and the purpose of forums. So keep on posting so myself and others can keep on learning with you.

Thank you for your kind reply RandyL. I thought, this weekend was going to have to be spent going through all my favourites and prioritising them. It seems now that I can keep them all now :)

What is the Windows Experience Index for your machine? On the desktop right click on "Computer" -> Properties -> Windows Experience Index.
