Service Pack 3???

Recommended Posts

Recently, my computer downloaded Service Pack 3. Then I noticed that

when I go to use a program I purchased (a golf handicap system) that a

window would come up which wanted me to install Microsoft Excel 2003. I

was not able to access this program. HOWEVER, if I access mu 2000

installed Mircosoft Excel, I have no problem opening spreadsheets.

I did a system restore to before Service Pack 3 was installed and my

golf handicap system is working just fine now.

Can anyone give me some direction or hints? Do I have to update my

Microsoft office (finally?) Seems unfair to me....

Many thanks in Advance.....

Perhaps the problem is with your Golf app, see if they offer any updates

Re: Service Pack 3???

You should have been updating Microsoft office all along. Another option is

to install the golf handicap program AFTER Sp3.

Have you been to Office Update to make sure all your Office apps are

fully up to date? That's strange for it to ask for something Excel

related when SP3 for XP is installed.

SERVICE PACK 3 - NOT JUST A PROBLEM WITH MY EXCEL ANYMORE!

SERVICE PACK 3 - NOT JUST A PROBLEM WITH MY EXCEL ANYMORE!

OK, now I am getting a bit ticked off.....even thought I did a system

restore to a point BEFORE my Service Pack 3 was installed, the computer

automatically reinstalled it after being booted up. (I do have the

automatic updates on, so I can't complain about that).

BUT

Now I cannot open a Power Point file directly from my emails any longer.

The service pack apparently tells the computer to look for a 2003

program, just like in the Excel. I have to save the Power Point file to

my hard drive and then open it in my 2000 version.

In response all of your generous responses to the original post seen

below (and I thank you so much in advance):

1) It cant be just the Golf Handicap Program because it now happens in

Power Point.

2) I guess I could have been updating MS Office all along, but

everything still worked so there was no reason. I guess they are now

FORCING me to do this...but in my opinion, that is just another

Microsoft's way of doing things. It does not leave a good taste in my

mouth.

3) No, Excel 2003 is not installed because I never upgraded it, but as I

type this, I am simultaneously in chat with the people on the site you

provided,

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

I will keep you informed...

Thanks.

Re: Service Pack 3???

Please start a new thread about this. Keep in mind that users who did NOT

have any problems installing or after installing SP3 (i.e., the majority of

WinXP users) have no reason to post to these newsgroups.

The only prerequisite for SP3 is having WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2 installed.

You should always keep your drivers, etc., updated anyway.

Support for WinXP SP2 ends in July 2010: After that, you'll need SP3

installed to be offered any further Windows Updates and to qualify for

continuing WinXP Support (which ends 08 April 2014).

Re: Service Pack 3???

Mr. Bear...

I as ONE always try to read all details prior to updates, however I believe

that the update product should also check to make sure that the system has

the prerequisites prior to allowing the update to continue.

There has been so many issues with SP3 that I do not think I will update to

SP3 for fear of one of my other programs not working or the possibility of

something not working because of an updated driver needed.

Why fix what ain't broke?

why not undo the last restore thus having SP3 installed, then remove SP3 via
