Can anyone recommend a program that will reliably read the PSU temperature.

Using PC Wizard 2010 my PSU currently shows 95C and it has been up to 104C. It is usually showing about 90C at idle and rarely less than that.

I have been getting random shutdowns and assumed it was the PSU causing this. Since I have turned the Cool N Quiet control off I don't seem to get the shutdowns but the temperatures still seem far too high.

Feeling the air being expelled by the PSU then it doesn't really seem to be that hot - hence my question as I don't want to splash out on another PSU unnecessarily.

The CPU is currently showing 46C and that varies between 37C and 57C, occasionally reaching 60C but I have seen it over 70C.

I am using Windows 7 and an AMD Phenom X4 Black edition cpu on a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard in a self built computer

I suspect a power supply issue here, being a custom built machine the power supply may not be big enough, especially if there is a separate graphics card which you don't mention. What is the power rating of the PSU, it should be on the label on the PSU in watts or just W.

Hi Nev, Thanks for the reply - I have moved this to the PSU forum under "Is the PSU Failing" but have had no replies there.

My PSU was 600W and I have an ATI readeon 3600 video card; but as I sid in the other forum I have replaved it with a G& 780W PSU but the heating still remains. I think the CPU is fine as after researching that it is OK up to 65C and at the moment it is beteween 45 and 55C even inder load. When I put it under 100% load on all 4 cores it went up to 62.5C.

But what puzzles me is immediately after boot up my PSU is showing at 85C and when put at 100% on all 4 cores I have seen the PSU temperature as high as 126C. I am wondering if this is a genuine reading on the PSU as it certainly doesn't feel that hot to the touch but I tried CoreTemp and that gave the same readings as PC Wizard.

I have rather redfaced solved the shutting down as somehow the setting to switch the display off after 20 minutes was on and yet that is a setting I have never used as I never shut my display down; although after the machine had shut down like that it had to be rebooted as it wouldn't wake up any other way and sometmes I was told the machine hadn't shut down correctly when rebooting.

Maybe I am worrying about this too much, maybe you can advise me on that!

Should I continue on this thread or should we move to the PSU forum?

As ever I am truly grateful for any advice you can give me.

At this moment then I knowing that the PSU is a 780W one I would be saying that those readings are false as I doubt that there is even a temperature sensor connected either to or in the PSU. I have used Speedfan in the past and that has shown a PSU temperature as minus something a lot below freezing point, but I know there is no sensor or connection in my case so ignore it.

As for the display shut down, do you mean a setting within the display, or a setting in the computer? If it is a direct display setting controlled from the monitor buttons themselves, then we can consider that one finished.

If a setting within the computer, just see what happens and if resetting it has cured it.

It was a setting in the control panel under power options - no idea how that got turned on though.

I will stop worrying and assume the PSU temperature is false; as the CPU temperatures are within tolerances and it seems to stay on as long as I want it to now I think we can consider this one solved - thanks again Nev.
