Where did/does a windows xp reformat cd come from, not microsoft, they

make no such monster...Also,if xp pro is currently installed on the hd,why

purchase another copy,or is the cd made up from a 3rd party.A full version

of xp pro runs 150-200.00...Also,the only way xp retail reformats a hd,is by

booting to xp cd,from the xp boot menu, one needs to tell the installation to

format,its not auto..

You give so little it's impossible to say what your problem is. One

thing's for sure... it sounds like you're getting what you paid for.

Re: reformat so slow!!

perhaps, your original

problem was not the

o.s. but a malfunctioning

software that would

stall your system at

startup.

thus if you are using

a functional cd to

repair your system,

then it would likely

be stalling as well.

if in fact your stalling

is a result of installing

sp3 and now you are

trying to repair it with

that sp3 disk, then perhaps

your system is simply

incompatible with sp3

altogether.

some drivers are "exactly"

designed for "sp2" and

you will need updated

drivers from the manufacture

when they are ready.

many of them focused on

updated drivers for vista.

my suggestion is to

use your original windows

sp2 cd to fix your problem

at this time.

Excessively long time required to format drives is often and indication

of a failing hard disk, get a diagnostic utility from the drive

manufacturer and have it check your drive.

Re: reformat so slow!!

well, there are two

outcomes if you wait

for sp3, 1) either it will

eventually install or

2) it will never install.

the problem with (1) above

is that there is a clear

problem with optimal

performance.

if your system is not

optimal enough to install

sp3, then your o.s. will

"always" be less than optimal

and will eventually disintegrate

into a non functioning system.

further, if any of your hardware

drivers were designed "specifically"

for windows xp sp2, then they

are not likely to work with

sp1 or sp3, until the hardware

makers provide an updated

driver.

the other issue you are

referencing is sp2 and using

a cd.

this might be a viable option

to go because you will

be able to "repair" your

windows sp2 system with

it.

however, if at this time the

initial problem you are

having is a result of faulty

hardware or third party

software like norton,

then your sp2 disk will

be of little help unless you

use it to wipe the disk

and reinstall windows from

new.

so my recommendation

at this time is to see if

there is a chance that

you can boot into safemodes.

if you can then you are

in better position to begin

the process of stabilizing

your system again by

reconfiguring your system

for optimal performance.

however, if safemodes are

as faulty as your normal

mode, then you might be

able to tune up the disk

with "any" windows xp

cd via the recovery console.

if the recovery console method

fails, then your options

are limited but never the

less there are a couple of

left.

let us know your stats

and discoveries.

Re: reformat so slow!!

You can usually get that information from the BIOS. Find the hard disk

information and search the net on it. Or open the case and get the name

and drive model number on the disk and search on it.

Where did you get this CD from? What kind of CD is it? Please be

specific.

Which instructions did you follow? If you are performing a clean

install, you should find these instructions thorough and

straightforward:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Make sure you are booting off the CD!

If you still have problems, please let us know at which numbered step

this occurs.

> i am reformatting with windows XP with an sp3 that was slippstreamed

Did you do the slipstreaming? If so, how? Perhaps there is something

wrong with the slipstreamed disk. How about trying a clean install with

the original CD?

I noticed that John John suggested you may have a hardware problem.

While this is quite possible, I recall all your other posts, which

indicated you have had some pretty bad malware infestations. So that is

why I am asking all the above questions. If performing a clean install

the proper way yields the results you mentioned above, than you really

should follow John John's advice. It's just that I'm not convinced yet

that you are performing the clean install the proper way.
