Some windows won't open up from the Taskbar

Hi all,

Yesterday, I had a small problem opening up a Notepad file. I

double-clicked it and it showed up in the Taskbar but it would not

maximize on the screen. It still does that today, as does my website

program, Cutesite Builder. All other programs open up fine from the

Taskbar. I am running Windows XP with SP2. Any ideas what might cause

this?

Thanks,

Stacy

Right-click each, in the Taskbar and click Maximize. If they show, but

not when in the Restored condition, the coordinates may be moving them

off-screen. Try a right-click of the Taskbar, click "Cascade Windows"

to move them back on-screen.

That doesn't work, Joe. Neither Maximize nor Restore after I

right-clicked on them. Cascading the windows didn't help, either.

Thanks, though.

I can't even switch over to the two windows from the Task manager. They

won't maximize at all.

You might try a system restore to a date before the problems first

occurred. Or maybe a Windows Repair install.

When I open up the Windows Recovery Console, do I need to type something

specific into the command line to repair Notepad?

The System Restore won't let me restore any sooner than May 20 which is

a bit far back to be doing that.

I'm not really worried about Notepad all that much. I can open all

those files with Word. But I need my website program for my baseball

league, so that is pretty important.

Dunno. You might try this first. But it will only help with Notepad,

not the other program.

326. Restore Notepad.exe

Nope, that didn't help.

If you right-click the program on the Taskbar, what options are there,

and which ones are grayed out? If you open a second instance of the

program, is it minimized too? Are there any unique programs running on

your system? If you open Notepad, rather than open it through a file,

is it minimized too? Have you ever had a second monitor attached?

Here are many discussions on programs minimizing to the Taskbar.. maybe

one of the threads will strike a chord with you.

Hi Joe,

When I first open up Notepad and right-click on it in the Taskbar, all

the options except Restore are available. When I click on Maximize and

then right-click on it again, only Restore and Minimize available. A

second Notepad document does the same. When I try that with my website

program, nothing comes up when I right-clck on it. I have never

attached a second monitor to my system.

I'll check out the other threads as well.

None of the other threads had anything that helped.

Look for malware or other software messing up your programs.

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged

or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so

damaged files will be replaced.

Try a Windows repair install. To do a repair install:
