SP-3? This sucks

I just downloaded and installed SP 3 for XP and my Windows startup sound is

gone and the old Windows startup sound has been restored by SP 3. WHY? How

does the startup sound matter to the operating system? The problem is i used

a top fuel dragster starting for my startup sound and i did not keep a copy.

The only copy i had was in Windows/media folder and is now gone. I spent a

lot of time on the Internet tracking down the right sounding track and legal

as well. Where would the SP 3 installation put deleted files? Or are the

files gone.

Smooth move. And of course you don't do backups either, right?

Your stuff may be in a different profile. Right click on

"Start" and left lick on the upper "Explore" (second one down).

See it there are other profiles. May your stuff is in one of them.

Just a long shot.

Actually just before installing SP 3 i imaged my entire c-drive with Image

For Windows but i hardly want to restore a 3 gb image for one 200kb file. I

guess i could use add/remove programs to remove SP 3 and that would restore

the file. Yes/No

If you had used Acronis True Image, you could merely restore that one

file :-)

If it was a .wav file, seacrh for all *.wav files.

It is probably still there somewhere.

I expect so, too. Most likely in the \windows\media directory.

Installing a SP wouldn't delete your .wav file.

Totally unnecessary. It's still there on the HD. Installing a SP

doesn't delete one's .wav files.

No it isn't in the Windows\media directory where i originally put it. It is

nowhere to be found, and SP 3 did do something with it. I don't know why but

it did change it back to the old Startup file.

It's back! I went ahead and removed SP 3 and my Top fuel Startup file is

back. In fact as i was watching the progress bar for the uninstall i clearly

saw during the COPY TO operation a reference to C;/Windows/Media which had to

be my file. For some reason it also returned the default text on the Run box

which i had changed to my own text a long time ago.

Outside of this being interesting, I'm more interested in hearing the

wave file. :-) I'd almost ask you to violate the 'text only' NG

thinggy and upload it... :-)

PS, if your text change to the run box is a registry change, I export

all those 'fixes' I make to my system and save the .reg files for future

installs. I find it fun to edit the system but I also find it more

value to find the edits in the registry and then export them to save my

time.

It would if the OP's file was renamed as a default. Maybe that's what

he did. Then it would have been overwritten.

These are notes i save of some hacks i do. But removing SP 3 returned my text.

#14

Run box Hack...

Changed text of shell32.dll/Dialog 1003/1033 using ResourseHacker and

Replacer.....

(The modified file is here: D:\Tools\Modified system files)

To revert to original text run Replacer in safe mode and replace

C:/Windows/System32 shell32.dll with D:/fromwindows/system32

/dllcache/shell32.dll

It sounds pretty cool when my computer starts up. NHRA.com has some

multimedia files on their site which play with Quicktime. The 10 mb one is

the file i used i believe

after i shortened it to about 10 seconds. However the link appeared to be

dead when i

was there yesterday. The 454kb(dragster idling) file is very similar to how

mine sounds. Link:http://www.nhra.com/sounds/index.htm

I was counting on his NOT having done that (or allowed that). But yeah,

it's a possibility.
