Help! Earthlink Uninstall Killed Dial-Up Communication

My mother is running a Dell PC with Windows MCE 2005 w/ IE 6. Shortly after

buying her this new machine, her ISP of 6 years was sold to Earthlink.

Consequently, her 1-yr prepaid internet service went with it. When her

prepaid service was about to expire, I set her up with service from PeoplePC.

The Earthlink and PeoplePC software kept fighting for control, so I disable

all of the Earthlink software from executing -- problem solved. So, a few

months later, the PeoplePC homepage occasionally doesn't load properly - too

much scripting I think.

She calls me PeoplePC for Tech support rather me (default Tech support).

PeoplePC tells here she must have the latest browser software. I'm not

buying it --why would she have to have IE 7?

So, one day she calls my sister (backup tech support), and via phone they

uninstall Earthlink (or at least a portion of it). Now, we she tries to

connect to PeoplePC, the modem dials and connects successfully - but nothing

can get through (IE, firefox, Outlook). Due to some other Earthlink error

message still being received, I walk her through a complete unistall of

Earthlink (and it's shovelware) - still won't connect.

Next, we uninstalled PeoplePC and reinstalled it -- thinking perhaps

Earthlink deleted a file needed by PeoplePC (since they're now owned by

Earthlink and use similar software) -- nope, still won't connect.

Now, we've installed Symantec (anti-virus & firewall) and turned on the

Windows firewall (just in case). Same dang thing!!! Dial-up will connect

to PeoplePC and my own personal ISP, but nothing can get through (IE,

FireFox, Outlook)...

Anyone seen this before or have a suggestion how to fix this ? (I'm not a

fan of System Restore).

Thanks,

C. Collings

A bit off topic, maybe, but in all my years of internet, even the dial

up days, I've never loaded any software for connection. Windows allows

you to make a dial up connection and put in a phone #. End of job.

My question is, is there really software needed for PeoplePC or is this

just another (excuse the wording) dumb user install/setup program.

My cable company has the same issue, yet when they came in and installed

the modem, I just sat at the PC and made the internet connection without

their software. It works. Duh. Its DHCP.

Just a thought. Not sure how much network setup you know.

PeoplePC uses a proprietary dial-up program (and it is required to connect to them).

I do not recommend any of the following ISPs for this type of problem:

PeoplePC, NetZero, Earthlink, AOL, MSN.

Now for the OP's fix. Search for a program called "winsockfix"

Run it and you should be able to surf when you get connected again.

I have no association with the following ISP, but fine there service to be excellent for my

customers who want a low-cost dial up service. See http://www.ISP.com and choose their standard service

for $9.95 per month. (The dial-up highspeed is not really highspeed and should not be purchased)

I knew about AOL, and could only assume that PeoplePC might have the

same type of setup. Thanks

Richard, Thanks for the tip. I'll give my Mom a call tonight and see if it

works.

Not required for MSN connection. You can use plain old DUN.

Try reinstalling the Earthlink TA software , restart and immediately

uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs. Maybe it was not cleanly

uninstalled. Then reinstall the PeoplePC software and see if that helps.
