I have an XP Home edition on my Medion Computer.

I recently installed a Cannon 4400F Scanner and now the Computer will not shut down automaticly---it will log off etc--but I have to switch off at the mains.

I have reinstalled the Scanner several times but with no success

That apart everything is working fine.

Can anyone advise ?

Hi.

It does sound like the scanner is the issue since it shuts down properly when you uninstall the software.

It might be that the software is running in the background. If a program is running that can sometimes prevent a Windows based computer from shutting down.

Let's see if some of the software is running at startup which is not a neccessary thing but manufacturers like to do that.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig

Click the startup tab.

Look for any items related to the scanner and uncheck or untic them.

Click apply, ok, etc.

Restart the computer for the changes to take effect then try a normal shutdown.

Can you please verify that it shuts down correctly with the software uninstalled?

It might be worth checking if all the drivers and software are the latest version. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_4400f#DriversAndSoftware
