Card Reader not recognised

Hi,

I'm trying to install a a SDHC All-in-one USB2.0 card reader in winxp sp2.

The problem is when I plug the card reader in windows states "USB Device not

recognised". It appears under device manager as an unknown device. It doesn't

appear under "My Computer". I've tried it on all usb ports, but still doesn't

work and I know that the reader is OK as I've tried it on another pc. I don't

know if the following info is of any help, but the USB controller is SiS 7001

PCI to USB Open Host Controller. Thankyou for any help!

Does your PC support USB 2.0 ? The controller you list is a USB 1(.1)

technology. You may need to install/update the Chipset driver package

for your motherboard. All USB peripherals have a VID and PID which

are unique identifiers that Windows uses to scan/load the correct driver.

When XP places a detected device in the USB category as "Unknown"

it is unable to resolve the VID/PID.

The Chipset driver should come from your PC's vendor web site or you

can get drivers from Sis ( Be careful to get the correct driver ).

The Sis Menu/Agreement page found here:

http://www.sis.com/download/agreement.php?url=/download/

Thankyou for your quick reply. Confused...Following the SiS download

instructions, I'm unsure which driver I need. The available downloads are

SATA/RAID, GPU graphics driver, IGP graphics driver, IDE driver & AGP (Gart)

driver. Can you please advise further and what I need to do before install.

Don't thank me just yet, I hadn't actually gone through the SiS listing

in a while and didn't realize the composite package wasn't available.

Usually and in the past both Intel and VIA provided a download that

includes the motherboard drivers. I thought SiS provided the same,

but it looks like their downloads are separated into individual drivers.

You may need to bypass the SiS site and get the drivers from your

PC vendor. You can however use the SiS Chipset identifier app to

verify which Chipset family you have on your computer:

http://www.sis.com/support/support_prodid.htm

*The drivers that SiS provides are generic and might not work on

your setup.

Re: Card Reader not recognised

I'm unsure what I need to update. Anyway, here's the results:

North Bridge Chipset:650

South Bridge Chipset:961

Graphics Processing Unit:NVidia

Related drivers:

Graphics-NVidia-N/A. Provided by board maker.

AGP-SiS Acceleration Graphic Port-Download available

IDE-SiS IDE Controller-Download available

USB-USB 1.1-N/A. Provided by OS.

Audio-SiS 7012 Audio Controller-Download available

LAN-SiS 900 Fast Ethernet Controller-Download available

If you be very kind and advise what I need to update, and before performing

any update what precautions do I need to take. Will this affect any other USB

devices plugged in at present. It's worth mentioning that I borrowed another

card reader from a neighbour, which is also 2.0 and this was detected

straight away. I also had problems a while ago with a USB pen drive which I

tried to resolve myself but couldn't. Thanks again.
