Inlightned Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 (edited) Hello, I would like to upgrade my current graphics card since it's quite horrible. However, I am not entirely sure whether the graphics card that I am interested will be compatible with my PC. Therefore, it would be fantastic to receive some helpful replies regarding this upgrade. I would like to upgrade to GeForce 9800GT at the moment I have NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS. Below I will include some useful information: Operating System: Windows XP (Professional) Manufacturer: Advent Model: T9608 http://www.ipix.lt/images/17465599.png EDIT: (I forgot to mention that I will have 2 GB of RAM in a week) Should you have anymore questions regarding this, please do ask. Also, I am open to any suggestions (different choices) regarding the graphics card. Thanks. Edited May 1, 2011 by Inlightned Quote
KenB Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Hi, Both cards are PCIe x 16 so the new card will be compatible with the motherboard. The new card specs suggest a PSU of 400W minimum. If you don't have this then you may need to upgrade this too. Are you 100% sure that it will be compatible with the motherboard? Also, I'm really ignorant regarding the entire hardware-upgrade-issue as I've never performed it. I believe that I have a PSU of 350W, therefore I would have to upgrade my PSU if I wanted to use the new graphics card, correct? Any suggestions towards that (what kind of PSU to buy/where to buy it, etc)? Thank you for the advice so far, I really do appreciate it a lot! Inlightned Posted May 1, 2011 Author Posted May 1, 2011 Apparently we cannot edit our posts more than 1 time, hence a new reply... Anyway, I've done a little research towards PSU and I believe I found a good choice. Please let me know whether it really is a good choice. Thanks. 780w G7 ATX PSU Quote
Inlightned Posted May 1, 2011 Author Posted May 1, 2011 (edited) I apologize for so many replies at once, however, I've done more research: Novatech PowerStation Gaming 500W Silent ATX2 Modular Power Supply Novatech PowerStation Gaming 600W Silent ATX2 Modular Power Supply Novatech GeForce GT 440 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express - Retail Gainward GeForce GT 440 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express - Retail Oh, and if it's any help - I am looking to spend around £30-60 for PSU & £60-100 for the card. That's around 50$ to 100$ for CPU & 100$ to 170$ for Graphics card. Edited May 1, 2011 by Inlightned Quote
KenB Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 Hi, As I stated before, your present Video Card is PCIe x 16 as is the new one. You will have at least one slot on your m/board. Whichever card you select will need to be PCIe x 16. ( The vast majority are ). Your PSU is 350Watt - if you are upgrading the Video Card you will need to upgrade this too. I would suggest at least 600Watt - you would then have more than enough power if you decided to upgrade again. Did you take a look at this one recommended in my link above. These guys know what they are talking about. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gaming-graphics-card-geforce-gtx-590-radeon-hd-6990,2879-3.html You don't say what you want to use the Video Card for. If it is gaming ( I am not a gamer ) then you could do a lot worse than to take a serious look at the link provided. I stop at recommending specific hardware. I leave it to you to spend your hard earned cash. I hope I have helped you come to a decission. Plastic Nev Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Just to clarify Kens reply, we don't normally make any recommendation as to manufacturer, (unless we know one is known to be poor) this could be construed as advertising you see, so we will help in specifications where possible, but as to final choice between one make or another, it is up to you and what you can afford, or even what you may have heard as to reliable makes. I will say though that for just about every manufacturer and component made, there will be a professional revue of it somewhere on Google. Hope this helps, and you find the graphics card that performs as you want it too. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
