100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them - l

Hi, there are files in my system, which must number close to 1000, and I need

help to know which microsoft forum to ask for help in how to get rid of these.

I noticed them first when spyware scanner was scanning this area for about

an hour, that's how many there are.

Here is one of them and they all look the same, just different numbers.

08E84DB0-66CF-4546-B510-8A6B12D9BF8B.WindowsLiveContact

If is related to windows live, I dont' know what that is, never downloaded

anything to do with it. Microsoft or hotmail said i had to have a live.com

email so i got one and that was months back and since then, appears when junk

was tossed on system, though not sure.

Can someone direct me which forum to go to to get help with finding out what

these files are and how to get rid of them?

I have maybe 15 people in my msn im for addresses and im just 3 or so people

total. No clue if is related to above.

Thanks for your help!

Hi!

Thanks for replying, but something is broke and due to those files, my scans

are only on those, and they are microsoft related, and are causing a problem

as scans can't get thru them all.

What folder/directory are they in?

Go to that, right click it and choose PROPERTIES

How many files does it show and how much space do they use.

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

Hi!

it's in docs and settings/my name/Contacts/my email/Ignored

my name and my email of course are replaced.

13,325 files 5.14mb

attributes hidden

Appreciate your help! You can see with this number of files, that scanning

is impossible. Even tho the size it takes is small if 5 mb are small.

I doubt that you'd hurt anything if you merely deleted them. If you

are concerned about deleting them, first copy them to someplace else

(a flash drive?) and then delete them.

Hi Map,

They are a problem. When running scans, scans run forever as are checking

every one of those files.

Do a Google search on "WindowsLiveContact". The files seem to be related to

Windows Messenger.

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

Thanks.. I'm a little nervous at that. I have a real old ibm'er pc. Can't

even get the a drive to work for a emergency disk, but at least it lights up

at boot. hehe

The other poster, below, gave some links, which I quickly looked at, was

kind of him, but of course don't understand a bit of it.

But you feel fairly confident is not a problem to delete?

Do you think these files in a sense representative of incoming email? That

addy, surely hasn't had 13, thousand incoming pms. At least I rather doubt

it. I did notice creation date was july 07, when may have been when I

updated to the newer msn, and created that addy for it.

Thanks again for your help,

take care,

casey

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

Hi, yes they are, as I only use that email addy for messenger. And in my

first post, not sure if I left it in, but at one point, hotmail or microsoft,

one of em, said I HAD to get a live.com addy (which is hotmail.) Ever since

then, have had bunch of quirks, as it's infiltrated my machine. All i did

was get the addy, no clue what it did to my system. It must've had tentacles

and such with whatever live.com has to do with.

I didn't sign up for any junk, just the email as was told needed to have it

to continue using hotmail. And microsoft loaded garbage somehow thru that.

I see stuff related to live com all the time, and no clue what to do with it.

ah, i'm a little aggravated at it. Not right microsoft does this stuff.

But yes, the addy which has the 13,000 files is the addy i use on messenger.

Thanks,

casey

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

Ah just remembered. My original post in this thread is looking for the

microsoft forum which would deal with these files, I mean be familiar with

them.

So as you says if is messenger which I would guess they are as well, would

like to find the microsoft forum for them if anyone knows how.

I can't even subscribe to newsletters, microsoft makes it so complex, or is

buggy.

hugs,

Why do you need Windows Live Messenger? Get an email address by a

different means. Your complaint is well known and there doesn't seem to

a solution save for uninstalling Windows ( or MSN ) K=Live Messenger.

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

By windows live messenger, you mean msn? or any one of whatever microsoft

terms them?

I'm a moderator, and need msn for that.

Due to the passport bit, was forced to get a live.com addy, which all I did

with that is use it to forward mail. I never use it otherwise, and it's that

which started all the problems. I've no idea of what junk came in due to

that, and I didnt' download anything, except have updated the msn, some 5

months back.

but i see live. and msn stuff all over my system.

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

Open your LiveHotmail for each email ID and check your contacts there.

Run the cleanup to remove duplicates.

Or edit and remove those you don't want.

Re: 100s of microsoft files and don't know how to get rid of them

You probably have the option set in the mail so all mail you send keeps the

name and address for further reference. Look in mail tools>options>send.

Deleting all would hurt nothing. Also unclick it so it doesn't recreate

again.

What are you scanning _with_? And please be specific, including

version number. The reason I ask is that I use ZoneAlarm, and as

it has moved from version 6.5 to recent 7.0.... versions the virus

scanning has gotten more thorough so that cabinet (*.CAB) files

are scanned sslloowwllyy (the cure is to exclude them from the scan).

13,000 files isn't a lot these days, ten times that many is more the

current order of magnitude. But 13,000 files which individually

slow down a scan is another story.

So what are you scanning with, and is it sensitive to particular kinds

of files, and what is the type (extension, the three letters after the dot

in the full filename) of the files giving you trouble?

OK, but neither PA Bear nor any other interested observers will

be fully informed until you tell us _what_ spyware, and _ which_

release, precisely, of that spyware software you are using. You

may think this is over-precise, but these things really matter,

believe me, from personal experience.
